I'm always being called a geek, but I'm not always called a loser.

We've got to stop putting ourselves down and be proud of who we are

I like having this knowledge and expertise. I like having geeky interests.

You all should agree too

I have been pretty much labled throughout my life as a cool geek.. lol, mainly because i have kind of a split personaly, on one side i love programming, it takes up half of my life, then the other side i spend going out getting as wasted as possible. lol, love going raving, to clubs, pubs, bars and so on, but also love php, sql, stats and other geeky things.

Its kind of strange though, the people i hang out with know nothing about computers, yet they listen to me when i talk about it.. lol

So i guess i experience the best of both worlds This is why my life is perfect. I have never been picked on for my geeky side either.

same here. People come to me to help fix their computers... yet I'm a student in UK's biggest student town, so of course I love to go out and drink with my mates

I love my life too

Noone would dare 'pick on' me for my geeky side - mostly because people tend to expect me to know nothing about nothing, and also because when I do demonstrate in any way what I know... they tend to be more impressed than anything

I think that male geeks have the upper hand as time goes on, because when girls' electronics break to whom do they come for help

MY favorite geek story is when I was 16 I had to get new glasses and I was thinking of getting contacts, then I realized that this is just who I am (thanks to the help of TechTV, R.I.P, which I watched religiously.) and I shouldn't be ashamed of it and I shouldn't try to hide it, so I went out and found the thickest, darkest frames I could find and I've been wearing them ever since, I consider them a badge of honor, it's who I am and I'm proud of it.

I've always been proud to be a geek. If someone called me a geek, I would always take it as a compliment. Although I still get "the look" when I start talking about different technologies used in computers and video games as if they wanted to say," What the hell are you talking about?"

'geek' is indeed a badge of honor - a geek is the best person in the world to have on hand in an emergency, and they also tend to be the ones who get the highest paying jobs.

I've never actually been labeled a geek(in high school middle school is different), And somehow when I got into high school I got into the popular crowd, I go to parties, clubs, raves, and i throw parties. The major downside is I can't talk to anyone about computers and video games. Well video games to an extent.

Ryeguy,

I didn't get them because I wanted to look geeky, I went out and got them because those felt like who I was, I was contemplating contacts because I wanted to mask who I was, I got these glasses because they were a representation of who I am. I didn't want to be "labeled" a geek, I am one. By your logic going out and buying a CD from a band means you're trying to "label" yourself as liking them, that's kind of silly.

I've always been labeled a geek but I've never/rarely been considered awkward, been put down, etc. I'm never really an integral part of any specific group of people, but I'm the guys who is cool with everyone so you'll see me everywhere anyways. And I'm cool with that.

And not to toot my own horn but... in my fraternity they were joking about creating the god award just for me because having a geek in the fraternity is just so helpful (new website, doing a lot of ERP for the group, making our flyers look sexy, etc).

I'm cool with who I am.

I've never really been put down or insulted either. Maybe it helps to be taller than the opposition.

Weirdly enough, I seem to have intimidated a rather large bunch of people back when I was an undergrad. I didn't even know about it until a friend of mine told me a while ago.

Hi, My name is Rob and I'm a Geek...

I was addicted to video games in High School and read Omni magazine. I taught myself to program Basic and Assembler on a Timex Sinclair ZX81.. I have a Computer Science Degree and work as a software architect.. Yup I'm a geek.

But I have a normal side too.. I can speak in front of a crowd of people without peeing myself. I go to the gym, I even study and teach the Martial Arts and mygirlfreind is the lead singer in a local band..

Geeks can be cool people too..

Be the Geek!

A nerd is someone with poor social skills.

A geek is someone with an obsessive focus on an unusual or generally unpopular topic (read: technology).

I am something of both.

I'm pretty sure technology though is officially popular.

So i'd correct that to say "obsessive focus on something otherwise not in the mainstream interest."

- 14 February, 2007
Ati says
+4 Karma
Well, technology is a mainstream interest, but how it works is not. The average person knows exactly the following about their computer:

You turn it on, and then you press buttons to make it do stuff.

To be a computer geek, you must have a devoted interest to how your computer works, either in hardware or software.
- 14 February, 2007
Rob Masson says
+4 Karma
Well I think Computer Geek is an overloaded term.. you can be a Hardware Geek, a Programming Geek, a Web Geek, an Applications Geek, a Networking Geek, etc.

I think that Computer Hardware has become prett commoditized nowadays and as a result the vast magority of people buy computers without really understanding how the darn things work under the covers. For the innately curious and intelligent (two traits that I think all Geeks share) it means that they can focus on the areas that are less well defined and yield more relevant results to them.. like creating levels for Counter-Strike, or tweaking pictures with Photoshop. These are Technology focus areas of expertise that really require no knowledge of how the hardware really works.

Hey I am old school and I agree that there is value in understanding how the whole technology chain works, from the physics of semi-conductors right up to wiring your Tivo but I also know that you can't "know it all" and many of my Geek freinds have an expertise in areas I just suck at.

I guess i am a Geek Inclusionist! *grin*

Rob

ATI,

I think that is a fair delineation for us within the community but to the outside world mastery of anything having to do with a computer is sufficient to warrant the moniker "Computer Geek".

I saw the best T-Shirt the other day at a Boardgaming Convention (Yes I am a Board Game Geek too..) that said:

" NO! I will NOT fix your computer!"

ATI,

I have some buddies that are gaming friends of mine that would qualify as being more ggeky than myself. Oneof them works with a company that specializes in sattellites and has a very dep knowledge of networking protocols, geo syncronous orbital mechanics and electronics in general..

There is a certain presence that very intelligent people have I find.. ot arrogance, although I have met many people who are that, intgelligent and other wise. Perhaps it is a confidence, but it is very powerful. A few years agoSteven Hawking gave a lecture here in Boston and I scored tickets to it. I was in the fifth row at the Wang Venter so I had a great veiw of the Stage. Dr. Hawking came out and lectured for over and hour and it was simply amazing. Even through the compter generated voice, there was a rpesence. He was compelling and funny and engaging and for kust a second, just a breif moment when I left, I thought Ireally understood what he was talking about. I think that ability to touch others with a deeper understanding is a true gift that only the most talented and intelligent of people recieve.

It is remarkable that a man such as hawking could project a confidence such as you describe without the aid of gestures or changes of voice tone.

That he could do it purely on the value of his words, demonstrates the value of what he has to say beyond all doubts.
