J3nnif3r says
For my practice courcework I was asked to answer this questiono speed cameras reduce deaths on the road? I think the answer is no and have got lots on information to back me up on this. I was wondering what you thought.

I would say no, because people slow down just for the speed camera, then drive at their normal speed once they've passed. Plus, quite a number of speed cameras are placed so that the fines given will generate revenue, not slow drivers down in dangerous areas.
If you want people to slow down, better go for speed bumps. I know people hate them (I do, at any rate), but they're more effective to slow traffic down.

Yes, speed bumps is a good alternative *Scribbles down in science book* I also found that in some cases the speed cameras are the cause of accidents. People are too busy looking at their MPH thinger on the dashboard that they don't look where they are going.

I was thinking of building ramp structures on bridges. If you're doing the speed limit, no big deal. If you're speeding, well, you'll never do it again.

Yes, that was a joke.

Seriously, I think enforcing the law is usually an excellent way to ensure that the laws are obeyed (there are exceptions, notably involving drugs). I think that speed limit fines should be imposed only for dangerous offenders, but the fines should be tough. Endangering other people because you want to drive like a maniac is unforgivable.

Drunk drivers? I think jail time should be mandatory for driving while intoxicated. This isn't a mystery. If you drink a case of Bud, you aren't fit to drive. Everyone has been told this hundreds of times. Getting in your car and driving on a public roadway after that demonstrates a willful disregard for the lives of others.

I agree with QB about the ramps, and I'm not sure if I'm joking or not

Concenring drunk driving : in Norway, if you're caught, you have a month's imprisonment waiting for you. Unless you're foreign. Then you have the choice between jail time or thrown^H^H^H^H^H^Hescorted out the country. Unsurprisingly, they have good stats in that area (although recent statistics with younger drivers doesn't seem so good at the moment).

|J3n: Not joking. The Scandinavians were among the first to implement mandatory prison sentences for drunk-driving (not the same thing as speeding, don't know what their policy is on that, although any idiot who speeds on icy roads deserves to fall down a canyon).

Do they have hand held 'speed cameras' these days, in movable patrol cars. As far as i know, they only have radar guns over here.

See, i was just about to argue that if we had mobile speed cameras, then they WOULD reduce the death toll. However, i am not sure of this any longer, and so i have another question.

If there were a speed limit, but no penalties for speeding without incident (besides moral). Would deaths increase dramatically?

I suggest they would, because we're not mature enough to abide by laws without threat of punishment right?

I'm basically suggesting that it's possible that speed cameras (add in the mobile ones here (if they exist)), are a detriment to speeding and therefore do something to save lives.

Know what I'm getting at?
I base this on my passionate assumption that speed limits save lives, but no stats or figures.

what else besides speed cameras keep us within the limits, or do speed limits even reduce death toll.

what do y'all think?

my dad has a little liscence plate obscurer. you cant see more than a half of it from any angle. a week or so, he went out to "test it". no tickets yet, so im supposing that the cameras already have a patented method to fool them. its two little peices of plexiglas that go over the plate, and are tinted in such a way so that from any angle you can see half of the plate, but no more. so if a cop goes around your car, they can see it, etc, but the cameras cant.

kinda clever, but unethical in my opinion. then again my dad's famous method for getting something-
go to lowes, buy a ladder, cover ladder with tarp, pick berries off the trees for wine, take tarp off, return ladder for full refund.

so no one ever accused him of being ENTIRELY ethical.
then again, he's a bad example, and im proud of myself for recognizing that.

maybe some day he'll buy me a pistol.
