Animatronics - 05 February, 2007

I've recently begun to dable in Animatronics, as I've already created autonomous robots, and robotic arms (oh the joys of inverse kinematics!), so I thought I'd construct my own animatronic.
I'm using a PICAXE 16F84, on a development board, dozens of cheap DC motors, that are small, use low power and operate fairly well under low revs (this took some finding!). I chose DC servo's as Steppers are expensive in comparison. I'm also using alluminium for the core, fibre glass for the "bones" and Thixo White (a kind of liquid latex) for the skin.

Anyone else dabled in this area of Anthropomophic Robotica ;-) ?

I have not dabbled yet but the idea is awesome, do you have any pictures of your creation yet? Or any videos?

Nothing yet... just got the majority of the components, and all the designs done.
Still making the "Skeleton", then adding the clay (which turns out to be more expensive than I imagined!).

Once I've gotten somewhere, I'll put it up on cre.ations.net.

Well I would be very interested to see some schematics and any practical advice you have, I always wanted to get into robotics, but the hobby is above my income bracket right now

I know that feeling!

I got the PIC kit for my birthday, and bought the motors cheap, and _most_ of the rest of the equipment is fairly cheap... the expensive parts are the liquid latex (Thixo White) for the skin, the Fibre Glass for the "bones" and the alluminium (or similar lightweight, tough material) for the frame.
The only reason the "skin and bones" are so expensive, is they only come in large quantities, which is great seeing as how I want to make a few different animatronics, but not so great for the budding enthusiast, who just wants to have a go!

Once I have more of it built, I intend to write a tutorial, so I'll be sure to link it!
