But not freedom from your own self imposed rule, if we are to follow mob rule as you so truly believe in, then the mob disagrees with you my friend. The only thing you are doing is abolishing one set of chains for another.

While I do agree with you on some points, namely that almost all marriages in the past were an economic agreement between two unequal partners, I think your final conclusion is flawed.
I think marriage will continue, if not as an institution then as two people creating some sort of bond and commitment to each other for the rest of their lives, and I think your comment about being stuck with someone is short sighted frankly, making that commitment and honoring it as well as your spouse seems like the most amazing thing I can think of.
To be able to stand in the face of your concerns and your stories you have made up about what they say and do and realize that besides all that, you love them anyway, and you want to spend the rest of your life with that person.
Now, I don't mean to say that divorce should not be an option, I think a lot of people marry before they really even consider what marriage is, because they think that the passion they feel must be love, and will continue. Spoiler: it won't.

I think marriage will continue, if not as an institution then as two people creating some sort of bond and commitment to each other for the rest of their lives
That's called a stable relationship; in which partners are bonded by love and affection for one another. Why would anybody have anything against that?
Marriage, however, is an external pressure forcing itself against married folks.
Not from what I've seen. I don't think I know a single truly happy couple that'd been married for a long time. There are ones that are content about their marriage and all that, but nothing like before when they were in love. Most of them live in past memories...And I don't find anything "amazing" about it.
In contrast, free love rocks.
Well I am not going to dictate to you how to run your relationships, and I agree, I have seen many marriages end in strife and anger, or died in utter boring pointlessness. YET and this is a huge YET, I know people who not only have the comfort and peace that finding a person who you can spend the rest of your life with, but renew their love every day.
I am not saying marriage is perfect, but you will essentially have to change the entire paradigm of human relationships to achieve this crumbling you think is happening, good luck with that.
And I will be honest, almost every single marriage I have seen that continues in this idyllic state has been from 2 divorcees. Or from people who have been married in the past and have lost their significant other.
Did you mean "a mate for live"? I don't know about that. Giving the opportunity, most humans and other animals alike will "cheat".

Some very interesting replies people, I also had a few ideas for some new geeky material, and I was wondering if anybody would be interested.
I was thinking of a review community that people could submit personal reviews of hardware or software that they personally use, and gain an amount of karma based on either an approval system or a community based system/voting, it is still a little rough in my mind, but it is coming along.
Another idea I had was when Karma is finally monetized in some way or another that we could have a simple store for spending it if you do not want to buy advertising for the site, LED flashlights, USB keys, something simple and geeky and fun.
All just ideas folks but I would like to hear your feedback

I personally will resolve to keep the offtopic out of my posting, or in chat if ABSOLUTELY NEEDED.

Being the adventurous fellow I am, I took two and passed them on, biting into one was like eating solid human waste. I asked George (the farmer) what was in these horrid concoctions, and he replied "Rocky mountain oysters ", "Rocky mountain oysters?" I asked.

Malbolge
Taken from: http://www.lscheffer.com/malbolge.shtml
" Malbolge, for those not familiar with it, is a language designed to be difficult (or perhaps impossible - until recently, there was not even an informal argument showing Turing completeness) to program in. For example, the effect of any instruction depends on where it is located in memory (mod 94, of course), all instructions are self-modifying (according to a permutation table) and both the code and data pointers are incremented after every instruction, making it hard to re-use any code or data. There is no way to initialize memory except to one of the 8 instruction characters, there is no LOAD or STORE operator, and the only available memory operators (both of them) work in trinary and are designed to be opaque. The only control flow construct is an unconditional computed jump, which is also nearly worthless since there is no way (or certainly no obvious way) to set memory to anything except the 8 instruction characters."
Worst programming language ever.

I would say you are correct Jawad, and what you said reminded me of a Bertrand Russell quote:
"What I wish to maintain is that all faiths do harm. We may define 'faith' as a firm belief in something for which there is no evidence. When there is evidence, no one speaks of 'faith.' We do not speak of faith that two and two are four or that the earth is round. We only speak of faith when we wish to substitute emotion for evidence"
I think that looking for evidence behind opinions and facts is one of the features of geekdom, and because religion actively says "Do not question, believe instead." we ultimately reject it.

Jawad, you said the absence of evidence doesn't mean that htere is no evidence at all, and that is true, that is why all atheists who are honest with themselves admit that there is no way to disprove the current god, an invisible all knowing magical superpower is kind of hard to do, all we can say is that the likelihood of god is decreased to the point that we are no longer agnostic.
Just like I cant really disprove Zeus.

Because gringo doesn't think you will burn in hell for eternity for your transgressions against his perfect system of communism. And I am pretty sure his holy book(if he even has one) at least admits it was written by man, instead of the hand of god.
The fact that anyone can retain their faith in Christianity even after all the contradictions and obvious falsehoods and science showing the incorrectness of it boggles my mind.
And if you say you don't think you should have slaves or burn sacrifices to god, I would recommend you find something new to call yourself, or get yourself a new holy book., all this hypocrisy is getting to me.

Every time this comes up I am reminded of just a few years ago when interracial marriages were banned, this will go the same way as that, sadly I see this taking a much longer time, because apparently homophobia is more socially acceptable then racism right now.
The thing is it is all based on discrimination and fear. Who is hurt if 2 homosexuals get married? A lot of Christians I have talked to about this issue think that there is some sort of homosexual urge to throw marriage in the face of religion, and that simply is not true, they would just like the same right enjoyed by every dumbass hick heterosexual in America.

Rob I see your point, I guess I just want a buffer zone for when posting starts to get heavy, I know 5 Karma is not that big in the long run, but do we really want a user to be refused to create content? I don't know, something about the topic karma level feels a little high to me
I dont know if you have noticed it but it seems to me that a lot of posts are being skipped over for karma even if they really deserve it, because people just forget, or they become inspired and reply and then forget. I am not saying I feel slighted in this area, just that I regularly see deserving posts that I am the only one to give karma to.
Even if I am the only one who agrees with certain posts I rarely see a +3 on any post anymore, I guess the model would be more geared towards replying to current threads then making new ones if you want gather karma, unless you have some good flamebait or a reply generator, like a discussion about god

My philosophy is simple: because each person only can change a very very very small amount of things when it comes to the world, to do that and be happy for what you can do.
Striving to change what is impossible is what causes so much grief and pain in this world, and so much dissatisfaction.
We are raised to believe we can all be movie stars and astronauts and when you realize that life, while fun, is hard, you have to work to achieve anything, and really if you are handed things on a silver platter you will be dissatisfied with them.
So, accept your fate, and not only that, but love it. Life may be meaningless, but it is meaningless that it is meaningless, in a billion years the human race will be dead, and no one will remember us, so why worry

Well Yue, I think that the advantages MMO's have are basically they are complicated to start off and most people do need some sort of learning device to get themselves started(unless they are a hardcore gamer or really like to figure it all out) and they also have very user friendly "friending" systems, almost like a social network with a game attached, giving you something to talk about, my main beef is that MMO doesnt really require skill as much as a little luck and a LOT of time.
Personally if I find someone I like while playing DoD: S I don't feel afraid to ask them for their xfire handle (since most FPS players use it) and after playing with them for a bit if they seem cool I invite them to my, I guess you would call it troop's, ventrilo, a lot of people dont make the cut for that level of interaction because they are 14 or annoying or whatever, but a game where a good team means a win is a ton of fun when you can count on your teammates not to be dumb/total noobs/whatever.
Personally I think first person shooters have a lot of potential but they got stereotyped into the 14 year old leet speaking foul mouthed myg0t wannabe, and lost a lot of great players because of that ;_;

Also another question, are you drawn to MMOs because of the community of a clan/guild or because of the general lack of twitch gaming skills needed? Really I should rephrase and say: what makes you like an MMO in the first place?
Games - Posted By Constantine - Karma received: 0 |
|
I will say what everyone is thinking: no mmorpg is fun because the point of an mmo is not to be fun, it is to get as much money out of you as possible, which makes it so you must spend as much time as possible, which makes it boring, case in point: eve online skill training abilities, or WoW giving you extra XP for leaving, they want you paying but they dont need you using the server.
While I personally play multiplayer games(and enjoy them very much) it is usually a game that has a clear winning strategy and event, FPS's RTS's and things of that nature.

If you think that "the terrorists" are a real threat to America you need to do your homework:
In 1999
41,345 lost their lives due to car accidents
04,695 pedestrians were killed in auto accidents
For a total of 46,040 American deaths.
Total number of people killed in 9/11:
2819
Now while every one of those 2819 people are a horrendous tragedy, shouldn't we spend some of those hundreds of billions of dollars on making cars and roads safer?

P0ss I heartily disagree with what you are saying.
If you killed off the electricity in any city for 5 days you would have thousands of deaths minimum, and to a city like new york which is totally dependent on outside shipments of food and such you would have riots and chaos, if not mass killings and roving gangs trying to get the food supplies that would run scarce very quickly.

I think WIMAX and other long range affordable broadband internet solutions will usher in a closing of that gap for rural communities and poorer communities, all we need to do is teach the skills needed to use new technologies.

A little harsh eh Vera?
While stealing music is illegal, charging so much for music is a joke, and the only smart way is to price your music so that downloads are feasible and make sure your DRM is not onerous.
Guess how much it costs me to serve a song on my hosting? .0000025 dollars.
I acknowledge that there are other costs associated with making music (artists paycheck, promoting, mastering and studio time) there is no way on a large scale that an album should justify that much cost.

None of those are miracles, and what you describe is just probability and laws that govern science, if you decide that god created the universe and the laws that govern it, we are talking about a deist god again. I cannot ultimately disprove a deist god, because to do so you would need to know everything about the creation of this universe.
I would say though that the space teapot does apply in this case: http://onegoodmove.org/1gm/1gmarchive/2006/08/teapot_atheists.html

Also about people screwing up their computers; you are completely right, a lot of people dont install any anti-/virus/spyware/anything, do risky things in IE 6, and open strange emails regularly ;_; that is not microsofts fault (except for IE6 being crappy and windows being full of holes) but it is their fault for not being informed of how to use their tools.

Yeah I would say it is probably my favorite comic of all time bar none.
I also like the Fables series, it is a really weird look at old fairy tales, the premise is basically there was a fairy tale world that was invaded by some sort of evil emperor and they were forced into our world, where they set up a secret society and plan a way to strike back.
The main characters for the first 50 issues are Bigby (the big bad wolf) is the town detective and Snow White the assistant mayor, Bigby reminds of wolverine but with more blood on his hands.

First of all, I am 20 years old, and second of all, I am serious. If you want me to believe in an almighty deity who has magic powers and can see everything I do and will send me to the naughty place for forever if I do anything wrong, I expect a show of power that cannot be denied, or else I am calling bullshit.
Life - Posted By Constantine - Karma received: 0 |

You are redefining miracle to include things we already understand, and natural phenomenon, that is not a miracle, that is how the universe works.
A miracle is "An event that appears inexplicable by the laws of nature and so is held to be supernatural in origin or an act of God.
And finally a quote from Nadeem "After all, extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence, and the burden of proof is on the person making the claim."
Life - Posted By Constantine - Karma received: 0 |
|
That is a good point actually, I cannot reconcile what is outside of the laws of the universe and what science has not explained into two different things and be honest with myself at the same time, and if I do force "god" into a show of power that cannot yet be explained, you get a god of gaps, where more and more is explained until there is no room left for god.
But I find your evidence ridiculous, the fact that life exists only proves that life exists, and the same goes for our dimension, and an argument from the standpoint that you are amazed by it just is another argument from incredulity.
Life - Posted By Constantine - Karma received: 1 |

Gringo, I would argue two things:
1) You are right, when a person is given a choice instead of indoctrination and shown the glaring hypocrisy of religion and the belief in god in general, they come out not believing.
2) Nonetheless there are many people who were raised skeptic and found some sort of religious calling/belief, and vice versa

Well then conversely you could say that greed drives us to steal music if we do not feel the need to pay for it, and another equilibrium is achieved, one of theft by all parties.

Hx10, Science can not prove anything to be straight with you, all they can do is be pretty godamn sure, there is no 100%.
Now onto supernatural powers: dude, show us. Just because science currently cannot prove something does not mean it doesn't exist, but if you can't reproduce an effect why should we believe you at all?
People have told me they have seen aura's, a lot of people, and usually I dismiss that, but if someone could say, see an aura through a wall, and correctly tell me where a person was behind that wall without any audio clues or anything (double blind test) it would give at least some credence to something I can't see or believe at this point.
If you want to be thought of as legitimate and not a crackpot you have to give us something to gnaw on.

In an argument of evolution vs creationism it comes down to which is science:
The observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena.
Creationism has no science, the bible tells us the story and we try to find evidence to support it.
Evolution was had all those steps and it constantly revised and tested with evidence that has been found.
The crux of the point is that evolution can be proved wrong and replaced with a different theory if that theory is shown to have more evidence. Creationism will never change because it is based on a book of fairy tales.
