Zenmonk, it is as simple as amplitude modulating your any desired soundstream and optionally encoding (high quality format) and playing back. i used to use CoolEdit Pro 2 to do some mixing work and noticed that it has a function to amplitude mod any soundstream. each modulation frequency is associated with a different state of mind (alpha, beta, theta, etc.). Google exact frequencies. the amplitude os the modulation is also important as well as the stereo separation. you must also mix the different modes (gamma, then theta, then gamma) for max effectivity. best result requires a good set of headphones and some relaxing non attention grabbing music. i've tried this before but found that MP3 must be encoded very high bitrate in order to preserve effect (192+kbps).

you would first need seven (minimum) LEDs for the seven segments. each LED will need a resistor to limit current. you'll most likely use the output of the logic gate to "sink" the LED, thus driving it. that is bare minimum i think "sink" = normally high but goes low when activated. this way, current flows form +5VDC thru LED and resistor, into logic gate's output and into GND. i think...

very interesting. there's a sense of confusion in the overall theme. sounds like you're glad you've forgotten about it, got over the loss, and free. but at the same time, missing the tender moments, the simple joy. but that sense of confusion seems to be limitted to the second quadtrain. maybe it was unintentional but does emphasize the confusion aspect even more, as though its a random thought while trying to reminisce. overall, very nice i did notice that the beginning is much simpler compared to the ending, as though you got more "into it" as you end the poem. maybe rewriting it for consistency. but then again, its art, and this version seem to capture your state of mind

there is a new trend going on where the politician holds a sort of auction. the highest bidder (all bids are actually contributions) get a "date" with the politician and a chance to influence. no actual donation invovled in the strictest sense and thats how the bastards get away with it. definitely should have more strict rules on bribes and far stricter punishment (capital maybe?). that might clean up the place a bit. either that or rid ourselves of dirty politicians

In the perfect world, or atleast one where there is sufficient resources available so that all needs and most wants are met, greed would be a thing of the past. but currently, that doesnt seem to be true. help me provide for all the needs and materialistic wants of all of china, india, etc. and i'll personally help you convert the world to communism. i guess the other alternative is artificially reduce the drain on our current resources and control it so that those that remain can have all they want and need, living in a greedless, communistic utopia built upon the carcasses of the dead. believe it or not, i yearn for such a day.

i'm referring to the Cell BE in the PS3, not the generic one
Cutting Edge Computer Hardware - Posted By ATB - Karma received: 0
Quantum beat me to it once again Ati, the Cell BE engine only has 6 functional parallel processing nodes (the SPEs) and yet developers are already struggling. now bump that number up to say a million, billions, etc. i can already hear the suicidal gunfires, pills popping, and/or self hanging of the software developers another possible obstacle is accuracy. the brain is a very fast processor, no doubt. but its power is in the massively parallel architecture, not actual node processing speed (the electro-chemical signals from node to node or internally aren't that fast you know). side effect (or maybe a design advantage) of this is that its not as accurate as the transistors of an AMD processor. outputs are often averages and hit-n-miss guesses of many nodes. thats why we cant do complex floating point calculation in your head as accurate as a simple calculator

the most important part of a NN is the training and its architecture. first, an NN must be architected (is that a word?) to fit its task: define input types, output types, available operators of each node, memories, etc. second, train it. Human mind is highly developed because we have built in programming that evolved millions of years combined with online training that takes place as a child grows over the years. Now if we try to replicate the human brain/mind, then we must be prepare to spend significant time in training. its true that we dont fully understand how a NN could replicate human intelligence. that part is an architectural problem. we dont know the number of inputs per node, data type, trigger value, hysteris, operators (simple boolean logic, arithmetic, calculs, etc.), and the list goes on. once we have the architecture setup, then just program it and we're done. o and dont forget the usual stuffs like processing speed, mem requirement, power and cooling, etc did i answer the comment or just rambled???

@LN, sorry, but i see hope as something false. hope does dissapoint us from time to time. To hope and yearn is to set ourself up for possible (even if highly unlikely) dissapointment. Its better (IMHO) to want something but not attach ourselves to it. keeping detached will "let us down easy" should the hope/wish not come true. overall, this maintain a happy state of mind. but if it does come true, they hey, enjoy what you get. no point letting it go to waste. just stay detached

Ati, the brain is doing huge amount of redundancy calculation right now, thats why you havent received the BSOD yet. I wouldnt even know how to reboot someone if they did. but the price we pay for stability is inaccuracy. yes, you can command your finger to perform precise actions with your brain's impules and outputs. but that accuracy comes from feedback loops and complex control systems. even then, its not perfect. try pointing your finger at an arbitrary point in space and watch it waves a bit before stabilizing. thats part of the control system's response characteristics but hey, i wouldnt buying a Playstation 5 with BCU. imagine how nice Gran Turismo will look and feel on it

Nadeem, cant we implement the technique you outline using a NN? or maybe you didnt say that, i got confused. anyway, it sounds like you (the trainer) would just train the system to recognize the different classification and eventually stabilize itself (setting the optimal boundary to minimize impact of data noise, etc.) from what i know abt SVM (very little), they are not as flexible as NN in that NN can adapt to noise and self-train as it runs, much like the brain of a child learning from mistake. actually, thats exactly what NN is, an artificial brain that when properly constructed and primed, it can learn and eventually develop itself. if only we can build a NN with billions of nodes . Skynet would be just around the corner
Cognitive Science - Posted By ATB - Karma received: 1
that last part is true (first part is too, i'm just a bit ashamed, thats all ) i'm pretty sure all those rednecks in huge Ford F150's and woman in SUV doing their makeup while driving think they are competent and has a right to drive. this is especially apparent when people slam the brake for no apparent reason on a highway while in the left lane (fast lane) going at 65 mph. or people going 20mph on a highway when it starts to sprinkle a bit. or idiots that drive with their headlights off when it goes dark or in bad weather... the list goes on. o, btw, most of these are in TX so do your best to stay out of this state. california drivers are so much better at it.

Theoretically, a neuro network can handle any sort of computation and even decision making... we have one, its called the brain. theoretically, you could build and train (or pre-train) a NN to recognize spoken words or sub-vocal vibrations and translate that into text or whatever you wish. Actually, most modern speech recognition software and even mainframe systems uses a NN at its core. and no, a NN does not require any sort of bio computer or even a physical system, it could be done as software, electrical system, optical, mechanical, the list goes on.
Cognitive Science - Posted By ATB - Karma received: 2
O, i forgot to mention to check IEEE Spectrum or their research articles for the latest in NN
Cognitive Science - Posted By ATB - Karma received: 1
o, didnt quite get that when first read your post. then consider this: when you "intro" the software into a handful of neurons, that will send the program out to the remainder of the brain. eventually, info of the entire brain will race back to the point of origin. imagine state data of trillions of neurons feeding back to just a handful. bio-chemical imbalance could result from the excessive activity. if you get past that, then think of the bandwidth issue. those few neurons that link the brain to whatever hardware you have hooked up to the brain will have to be the path for all that data flow. it might bottleneck and take forever to download the entire brain. i guess you could go for a cold beer and some nachos while you wait though finally, the brain is a constantly evolving neuro network. to exactly capture its state, the states of all neurons must be captured simultaneously to preserve the integrity of the neuro network. so a semi serial approach may not work (except for brain dead patients maybe). best approach will have to be a parallel reading and recording system. and no, i wont try to patent that so you dont have to hunt me down for it

Politics - Posted By ATB - Karma received: 0
Ok, i gotta step it now. Ati, what you described in the original post is a technique called multiplexing. The way you described it is a feasible yet intrisically inefficient method. (just adding insults to injuries i'm afraid ) You'd actually have to increase the physical bandwidth of the system in order to transfer the 1.1, 1.0 values you suggested. an alternate solution is Frequency multiplexing where the different signals are shifted in the frequency domain so that they dont overlap each other and then combined into one single signal. still increases the overall bandwidth of the signal but uses the system's bandwidth more efficiently. also look to QAM, PSK, CDMA, TDMA, turbo codes, etc for other means to "cram more into less". Wikipedia got lots of info. And if you're up to it, IEEE articles are the best sources but are heavy reading. finally, i apologizes for kicking you while you're down, terrible habit. look at the bright side, if you thought of this a few centuries sooner, we could name some of these after you.

you do know that if we chose to go with sub-vocal microphones, we have to develop a whole new speech to text model/algorithm since it wont be the same as the one for spoken speech recognition. also, why not just link up to the current cellular network. the device can just relay the command through Cingular (supposedly the largest network in the US) to a server farm for processing, grab result from Wikipedia, trim results, do text to speech and route the audio back. actually, with this method, we can do it now with a cellphone and a decent bluetooth headset. someone has to set up a server farm to do the backend work though. it could be very profitable new mobile service. charge user a small fee for it (if people are dumb enough to pay $1 for each wallpaper they could easily download for free, they'll pay for this). you could also strike a deal with cellphone network since it will cause people to use their network, bringing them more money. alright, im gonna do it. patent pending yall

I dont think GM food stuffs (plants and/or animals) is bad. As a matter of fact, it seems almost inevitable. The main problem is the greedy corporation that controls these technologies. Like Poss pointed out, corporations such as Monsanto are doing everything in their power to abuse this technology as well as the legal system for their own gain. But this alone doesnt mean GM food are evil or anything of the sort. For example, if we genetically engineer a more pest, heat, and drought resistent crop that produce 10X as much grain AND not put a suicide gene in it and make them reproduce like bunnies (yea right, the corporation wouldnt do that, they'll go bankrupt), we could theoretically turn wastelands into fertile farms. Image the US plains such as Utah or Nevada turns green with crops. even if we dont consume all the grain, the plants being there alone should help the ecosystem tremendously. of course we'll probably never see that happening because it would mean that corporations would engineer have to their own demise as well as people spending money to help the environment and not get rich in the process... highly improbable events did i ramble for too long???

@Raven, You say that you're a one woman kind of man... let me ask you this... have you been with one for long? i mean been with one as in no-hold bars sex... most young guys (i dont mean to offend anyone) tend to say that they can go for the rest of their life with one woman and not care otherwise. that is until they are with one and then start to think the grass is greener on the other side. its human to do so... all im saying is, try not to throw that mind set around until you've experienced what i described. as for pr0n (lol) it can be looked at two ways. sure its not exactly sex, but it causes the mind to drift and tempted to think what if the grass really IS greener on the other side? i'm sure most are not affected but it is still temptation and could lead to problems in a relationship. now if you have a GF (or BF, whatever) that accept porn or even better, enjoy it with you, then it could just be another tool in a healthy relationship. Trusts me, the Kama Sutra is no where near as good as some tasteful porn flicks. very... uh... informative. something about videos and watching it with your girl that beats every illustrated Kama Sutra (or imitation) books out there (^_^). Agreed, millions will not be nearly enough. Sad and evil as that might sound but for this planet to reach equilibrium again, we'll need billions to die. Either that or find more hospitable areas to support the current and future population. That doesnt necessarily mean moving half the population to another planet, it could mean that we teraform what we currently have and expand. Do know that most human only occupy a tiny area of the earth's surface. it might be possible now if not the near future to teraform areas such as the Sahara or Siberia. There will also be the problem of energy. For that, the only solution would have to be fission or fusion but definitely not any sort of fossil fuel. with suffient space and energy, this planet can support us for a little longer, at least until we can develop more advance interstellar travel and teraforming technologies

The Seven Deadly Sins - Posted By ATB - Karma received: 2
sorry Marcus, let me clarify. I meant to say, at the root of this topic, we must answer the following question: which do we value more, happiness or being content. Once this question is answered, then and only then can we conclusively answer the question, is it truly better to have love and lost than not love at all. if we conclude that we value happiness more, then we could say that the happiness associated with love, and all the risks involved is worth it and we would do it again if given the chance. if we conclude that we value being content, then no, we rather not love at all for we rather be content and not experience the goodness of love while being spared of the feelings associated with love lost.

i disagree, if i dont know of love and its joy, you (i assume you've experienced it) might think i'm not as happy as possible. but to me, i'm the happiest person on earth. this leads me to think of the frame of reference problem in physics (relativity specifically)

but modus ponens gives a more optimistic view and make it easier to prove something true. just find one example that it is true and you can conclude its true now, modus tollens, its more strict. prove without a doubt that it is not false and you can conclude that it is true. its harder but the end conclusion seems more definite.

This brings me to think of that new internet royalty fee law where some american entity will extract profit from marginally profitable internet radio broadcasters on the otherside of the planet, even if they play stuffs like Mozart's symphone (and I'm sure Mozart is not a member of RIAA). but havent we seen this sort of behavior elsewhere in history? when a nation or empire grow strong enough and have exerted some influence on others, somehow their law becomes the ultimate law, regardless of national boundary. i dont like this sort of behavior either, but complain all we wish, its the "law of the jungle" though in the case of that guy you speak of that broke some law, is it by any chance ITAR or ITAR related? just curious (google ITAR) i'll write some more once my head clears after work

Marcus, you have a 20 years old dad? or did i read that wrong? @Ati, if the sweetest substance you've ever tasted is sugar and there is no way to analytically compare sweetness of substances (you just have to try it to know), how could you be hurt (or feel deprived) by not tasting saccharin or aspartame (thousands of times sweeter, ignore the health issues). wouldn't you be content with sugar? wouldnt you conclude that it is the best you have ever had and the best there could be? similarly, if we never felt the overwhelming joy of love, we wouldnt feel any less happy for not experiencing it... except human curiosity and mounds of literature on the subject will probably destroy this "ignorance"... I dont condone the idea of "not love at all" though. Mainly because i have loved and be loved, i've experienced the joy, so i can never return to the innocent state of being content with what i have. its as though i'm addicted, dont you all feel similarly? is love a drug (maybe a new topic needed).

i think we must define good and evil, not on just the spatial but also temporal dimension. this seems more general. taken from physics, generic and universal laws are generally more sucessful apply this to what Spock said, the good is what will give the most benefit to the most people in past, present, and future. though with this restriction, its near impossible to do anything good. it also give a chance for evil to be good. consider hitler's rampage. without his evil work, WW2 probably wouldnt have taken place. many of the tech gained there probably would have arrived until later. these tech have better the lives of millions since then and possibly billions more in the future. so in that sense, the monstrosity of WW2 could be good. but then again, good and bad in nonquantifiable so we can just manipulate it to see whatever we want comments? flame for making hitler seems good? anyone?

Very interesting points so far but they mostly tend towards risking it and rather being hurt than not experience love at all... is that the general feeling here? is it part of some type of mob mentallity or the fact that many think this way because it really works? I'm curious to hear the voice of those who think otherwise, the supposed minority. As with Fib, i've given up on the fantasy outlook towards love a while ago and am more realistic now. its not always rainbows and unicorns, reality is a mess and we must deal with it. i guess its part of growing up

sadly, there is no way for us to know when we really are ready and in hindsight, we usually find we're not. so in a way, leaving it up to teens to decide may not be such a good idea. which is why no age-of-consent law will ever be perfect. not even a purely mathematical one that could protect the young from being taken advantage of and prevent golddiggers from having their way

great little paradox with the whole "6 can be with 9 but 9 cant be with 6". but i guess if an absolute limit of 12 can be imposed to protect against such paradox. but in that case, we're once again imposing a hard limit in the law, not too different from what we have now. except its not as arbitrary, but more of a necessity to make the equation work. anyone else with a more foolproof equation? i think something quadratic or exponential should work. a challenge to all the math geeks out there

Lets think a bit about how others would feel if they know you gave your life just to hold back the inevitable: their eventual death. As others have said, I would gladly throw myself in front of danger to save someone I love, even if its to extend their life just a bit longer. But how would that person feel the rest of their life knowing the great sacrafice you've made. You'd be putting a huge burden on them to live out their life so that its worth your death. and if its someone you love (i'll go out on a limb to assume they love you too) how miserable would they be without you? as for giving my life for the planet? well, definitely, but if i were asked to give my life only for several billion communist chinese, no thanks, i still got a bottle of sauvignon i've been waiting to open.

I do see suicide as cowardly... only if i means that others are left behind to feel hurt by your departure. If you're alone in the world and no ones depends on you and no one would care (realistically speaking, not what you think in your head), then yea, off yourself. save the world the resource hit. but if you have atleast one person would cry if you die, then its cowardly to make it easier for yourself. thats why we sometime see mass suicides, that way no one is left to feel hurt. try this, the next time you feel like killing yourself, falsely annouce your death and hide for a week. then see if anyone cry or misses you. if no one, then i bid you farewell, enjoy the afterlife/next life/or whatever you believe in.

quite intereting point Rob but just because the curve is asymptotic doesnt mean you cant integrate with respect to time. if both emotions (joy and despair) are asymptotic then both can be integrated and compared. thus quantifying and comparing to see if the joy is sufficient to be worth the despair. if it meets a certain criteria (ratio is >0.5), then yes, its better to love and lost. otherwise, no. i know, i'm seeking logic and control where none exists. i try anyway

I have yet to hear an answer to my original question: but where do we drawn the line how do we justify that a love is worth the pain? if thats even possible. can we accept that its worth it if, for example, the length of time we were happily in love divided by the time we spend in depression afterward is >0.5? or maybe a more complex equation might better model it. why not attach rocket engines to the readily available asteroids in the belt and send them (insane number of them) at the earth. a small rocket should be enough to push them. and if we time it correctly, thousands of rocks hurling at the planet should scrath the place up quite a bit if not shatters it. whats more, the kinetic energy will mostly come from the same direction and directed at the sun, sending the planet ever closer to the sun. then its either destrution by falling into the sun, shredding by tidal forces, or collision with other objects. best of all, the tech is readily available now.

Besides, dont count on the average human to do such complex math. A note, I would do something about the lower limit of that equation, especially since it seems the lower limit is 6 years old. So the lower bound as well as the additive constant (6 or 7 in this case) could be adjusted depending on countries and cultures.

I just register today because of this post but have been following Shuzak's discussion for a few weeks now... great place I'm actually at a point in life where i'm constantly stressed like JHatFeeled. Again, partly because i'm thinking too much... is that a curse of the intellectuals? Some previous replies have said some very interesting things that I will try myself and see if it works, hope it does. I just want to note that its good to occupy our mind with some hobbies but make sure that its not just a way to run away from the problem. I've done that before. After breaking up with a girl that I was ready to married, I closed myself to the world. I picked up digital arts, music, and photography to keep myself occupied, keep myself from thinking about the pain, what I lost and what I could have had with her. For a while, it worked, I was "happy" and became normal. Its only until recently that I realized I'm only hiding behind those hobbies and that once I step back into the real world, all the pain and misery comes back. Not long after talking to her and seeing our pictures again, I broke down once again. My point is, have hobbies and such to keep yourself busy but dont forget to deal with the real problem. You can keep trimming a weed but unless you deal with the real problem, the roots, the weed will always grow back. (though weed might help at times, i dont recommend it ) Easier said than done, I know, I'm still working on it. But unless we somehow face the problem, in my case make peace with the lost and move on, the pain will always remain.
