Wendy, I would definately say MORE! Although I have had a couple of encounters that I regret in retrospect I still think that having a broad and exciting (and SAFE!) sexual history is very healthy. I think that we as a race need to more holistically embrace our sexuality and not be so darned self-conscious about it!

ATI, Great to be back Bro! Well I think initially TOL was a twilight zone rip off but later on and especially with the new version they found their own voice a little bit. They didn't try to keep repeating the "surprise twist" kind of stories that TZ is famous for and decided to produce just some solid sci-fi writing. I think some of the episodes are really very good and applaud them for helping bring sci-fi back into the mainstream of television audiences.

I LOVED Seven but I cna never bring myself to watch it again it was just so disturbing! The movie was so tightly shot and edited it was just brilliant but the build up to the horrific ending was emotionally draining. In a similar vein, I don't care to see Schindler's List ever again although I thought it was an incredible movie! It was just so hard to see the cruelty and horrors perpetrated on so many innocent people. Movies I loved and recommend but don't watch repeatedly (but would watch again once or twice) would also include: - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - so clever and engaging but once you understand it the thrill is diminshed on subsequent viewings - Memento - Such a twisted plot and an amazing ride that you will never be able to recapture on subsequent viewings. - Blair Witch Project - 'Nuff Said.

Well if we are talking about the worst case of incongruity between the Book and the Movie I definately have to nominate Starship Trropers.. Other than Space Mareines and Bugs there was no corelation between the Novel and the Movie what-so-ever. Having said that though, I do enjoy watching the movie.. as a stand alone entity.

I saw S3 and P3 last weekend when my son was visiting. Both were great movies and impressive chapters in amazing franchises. I have to admit though that I liked P3 more. I thought S3 was good but the action was so big and loud that it drowned out the subtlties of the performance that Toby and Kirsten were trying to bring to the story line. P3 on the other hand was brilliant! It was epic in scope and grandeur, Johnny Depp was spectacular and Orlando Bloom brilliant. It was a rolicking good film with an emotional subtlty that was well crafted and poignant. I am looking forward to a couple of other sequels although I do not expect them to be as great as P3. The new Fantastic 4 has my attention once more to try and get that franchise right. Of course Bruce Willis and the Die Hard seies is always good for a show and I am looking forward to that immesely.

Anger is a powerful emotion. As a Martial Artist we are taught to embrace and channel anger. Anger is great at removing Fear and Hesitation, it gives you that thrust of power and speed that you want but also makes you clumsy and hasty to judjement and action as well. It is primal and impossible to remove but by understanding it one can control it and turn it to better purposes.. We like to say that you use it for "Emotional Intensity".

P0ss makes an excellent point.. Some "destuctive" emotions can be very useful. Fear can help us to react to a dangerous situaion with increased strength and speed. Lust can propel us to Passion. SAdness can lead to insight and intropection. Also some of the "constructive" emotions can have side effects. "Peace" and "Sanquinity" can lead to prosperity but it can also lead to "sloth" and "gluttony". "Exhuberance" can become irrational and give one an overactive sense of optimism. Life is a collection of all these emotions and we have to experience and grow from all of them. Certainly we enjoy experiencing things like Love and Joy more than Sadness and Anger, but it is all part of our life and shapes who we are.
Evil - Posted By Rob Masson - Karma received: 4
Rath, My point (and I suspect P0ss's point as well although I don't wish to speak for him), it that by attaching labels such as "Destructuve/Constructive", "Energetic/Passive" one implies a certain separation and judgement. I think we were advocating a more holistic view of emotions and that it is difficult to create ANY arbitrary sorting scheme because of the circular nature with which the emotions are intertwined. And yes while the Jedi Philosphy does try to exclude certain emotions because they are "dangerous" it seems impractical that we can really remove them fromour psyche. I think anyone RULED by any one emotion will eventually find their lives out of balance. All these emotions occur to all of us... don't dwell on any one of them, don't cling to one and shun another.. Simply experience them in the context of your rich life...

Dun Cow, true.. many modems now come with all those features.. But it is best to find out and/or be sure anyway and get a firewall product.. It can always be turned off if not needed. And to your trivia question.. a hub allows you to sniff the packets of all traffic among the computers using that hub where a switch does not natively. If you are trying to diagnose a network problem it is easier to attach a protocol analyser to a Hub and watch all the traffic. Rob

Stacey, Yeah the FBI ditz is pretty annoying. Sylar is one mean bad guy though! Linderman may indeed generate back to life although it seems as if removing ones brain stops all powers.. afterall Clair and Peter cannot regenerate when they have something in their brain. I thought having Hiro's dad turn into his tutor was awesome! And clearly there has been a rift in the Secret Society. Perhaps his initial attempts to dissuade Hiro from his quest were part of a test / trying to protect him from the Society until he was ready to accept his mission / destiny. So Peter heard Sylar's thoughts because he can read peoples thoughts, it's not a hearing thing. Although it brings up an interesting question: can Peter absorb powers "second hand"? Afterall Sylar has absorbed the hearing ability, does that mean that Peter, having been close to Sylar, can now hear super-well? Looking forward to next weeks episode! Also I have heard that NBC has renewed the series for next year and added in a spinoff series about the origins of other heros. Altogether it will mean 30 episodes starting in the fall. VERY NICE!

Yue, The Wireless Routers that you linked too were all fine. They will negate the need for you to run wires IF you and your Mom's computer have a wireless card installed OR you have witeles external adapters. If they don't you will simply have to run ethernet cables and plug them in to the back of the router (make sure that the router you buy has both a Wireless FEature AND 4 ports to connect into..it's prettty standard nowadays.) And yes, Hubs are not Routers. Hubs and switches are network devices that reroute IP signals but cannot perform any advanced functions like NAT or DHCP. Additionally Hubs don't have firewalls built in like most Router Packages for the Small Office/home do. Yue the good news is that all of this geat is so common now and so cheap that you can get it anywhere from a variety of vendors. I prefer Linksys myself but D-Link and Negear have a strong following as well. TYpicaly the back of the package shows you the basic setup that you need. BTW, if you currently do NOT have a Router/Firewall setup at home understadn that your Mom's PC is DIRECTLY CONNECTED to the INTERNET and is likely the target of constant Port Scans and virus attacks especially if it is left on all the time. I would get that router with a firewall ASAP AND run a virus scanner/spyware detector on your Mom's machine in a hurry! Have fun!

Getting Bummed Out.. you know I hate that. It happens to all of us.. Something comes along that completely deflates our egos and we feel like we got hit by a truck and can't be happy about anything! It can be a girl, a lost opportunity, a very stupid mistake that has hurt someone you care about, there are so many triggers and they always seem to happen at BAD times. I am generally a pretty upbeat person but when I get taken down there is a pattern to how I deal with it. Initially I have to face the Shock and despair.. This is the harest for me because I really want to ignore and pretend it isn't there but I know from expereince I am just delaying and magnifying the inevitable moment. That moment is hard and it requires me to really embrace the pain and the loss and all the repurcussions. I usually like to lock myself away for a day or two because it is going to ravage me mentally. I;ll weep, be angry, ache, weep some more, blah blah blah... In essence I am grieving. Anger then fuels the resentment which typically makes more anger. This makes me feel even worse than the sadness because I become really frustrated and feel helpless. This is the key though, the root cause of the power that these events have over you, the feeling of helplessness. Eventually I digest things.. Understand a little about what i have learned about myself and recognize my own flawed humanity and how I have to accept some amount of responsibility for my predicament. This is hard because it would be easier to blame an outside force but placing blame does not allow you to gain control, and control is really what I am looking for. I resign myself to once again be the Captain of my own destiny. That these rocks I have steered myself onto were my own doing and that I have to find a solution because I am not ready to abandon ship yet. I begin to "Work the Problem". I take action and I improve my lot, sometimes only little increments at a time but I make progress and I face my own limitations and overcome them. When I become disheartened I look back on my past and remember my direst of times and gain strength from those successes. In the interim I continue on with my life. I get together with friends, I try new things, I see movies and I drink deeply of the cup of life. I know the point when the depression breaks because a fog seems to have lifted from me and my feet feel lighter and easier to move. Often times it occurrs with friends, talking and joking and suddenly something makes me laugh deeply and I find myselg laughing so hard that I am weeping and I know I have managed to expel that last breath of ill feelings and sadness from my body and that I can breath deeply, and gloriously again. So think back on moments in your life when you transcended yourself and was champion! A moment when all around you were proud and excited and looked to you with hope and love. Remember a terrible challenge you faced and how you reached deep down and found the strength to get through it. We all have reserves of Hope and Strength that we are not aware of and that we can access with the key of courage and determination. Most of all Laugh. Laugh at your flaws and at yourself and know that we are all cast from the same imperfect molds and must struggle to overcome our own limitations.

ATB, The "ignorance is bliss" argument is an interesting one however I would argue that we are inherently social creatures and that we NEED other people in order for us to be healthy and well adjusted people. I am not trying to say that you HAVe to have a romantic interest in your life in order to function but many studies have shown that people in committed relationships live longer and generally happier lives than people who are all alone. There is a pragmatic aspect too which is having someone that is emotionally committed to you provides you with additional resources and capabilities should your own fail you. Certainly freinds and family can assist in these roles but Romantic Love often forges a deep bond that weathers the tribulations of life longer than friendships and is complimentary to existing family ties. But putting pragmatism aside let's talk about passion and romance. I have found that I am the most creative, the most driven and feel the most alive when I am completely in the thrall of a woman. There is something that occurs when I am "In Love" that I do not expereince outside of it. It is an intensity and a desire that is unparralled and despite the fact that it is horriffic to loose, the chance to expereince it again is so tantalizing that I cannot ever imagine not trying especially if there is a chance you can capture that feeling and sustain it for a lifetime, whcih is what I think we all really are hoping for. Well that, and mad hot sex.... *grin*

And then I need two pillows for my head and one pillow for my legs (I put it between my knees). now I am like a Nuclear Pile at night and throw off heat like nobodies business so if I wear jammies I inevitable wake up sweating, so usially just my scivvies, maybe bottoms.. maybe. I have a contoured foam pillow that supports my neck and head just right so that make a big difference. If I am sleeping alone I usually have a long body pillow that I wrap around and I also usually stuff a pillow behind me so that I don't roll onto my back during the night. If I am sleeping with my gal then she usually spoons up behind me and she keeps me from rolling back. The BEST sleep I get is when I visit my fiance's parent house or my parents house. there is something about the cooler clean air in both of these places that makes me sleep so deeply and soundly.

BAJ A couple of things. 1/ Marks = Money. Going to Uni is expensive and having high marks makes you eligible for scholarships and grants. The harder you work, the less you will have to pay when you go to College whcih means you can spend your student loan moeny on beer and toys not on tuition and fees. It's a BIG incentive! 2/ Many Unis are using the Co-Op model where you work and study in alternating terms. This means more money for you and job experience but you have to maintain a certain academic standing. Again Marks = Money! 3/ This one is really important. At Uni no-one is going to give a shit about your study habits. They are not going to ride you about doing homework or passing in assignments or lecture you on 'realizing your potential". They are going to take your money and fail your ass if you don't work hard. And it's goin got be hard work. Now could you have a great job without a Uni Degree. Sure! p0ss certainly did. But your odds are not great. There are a lot more smart guys working dead end jobs because they don't have a degree than there are Uni Graduates struggling to get hired. That degree is your evidence that you can work hard and manage yourself well enough to graduate and that is at least some indication about whether you will be a good employee. More important than that though is that I beleive a University Degree teaches you to think critically. this is the dawn of the informaiton age and there is a growing divide between those that can create, contribute and enahnce the Knowlege Based Econmy and those that simply service them. you certainly want to be part of the class of people that benefit from the advances in technology, not ones that live in dread and fear of it.

ATB, I think that trying to rationalize and quantify Love is almost impossible because anyone In Love will tell you the the "Joy" curve is asymptotic..And anyone Crushed by Love will say that the "Despair" curve is equally asymptotic.. Both number so large as to defy quantification. I think this freightens us all and we try and "control" and mediate the risk, but ultimately we are who we are and falling in Love follows it's own timeline and accelleration as does the loss of Love. Love.. is a Singularity.

P0ss has given you some excellent advice and made some tremendous points. I will not reiterate all of them but I think it is worth stressing one very important one: You life is going on RIGHT NOW! Good, Bad, Meh, whatever, it is your life and you cannot know how many days of it you get. Hapiness is a state of being you will choose to be in or not, there is no fairy that comes along and slips it under your pillow. Your situation with the rent sucks out loud. It will be causing you stress but ou know what.. You can do something about it.. You can do something because you are alive and breathing and smart and frankly the world is yours for the taking. P0ss made some great suggestions.. You can look for another roomate, you can see if the other flat mates can chip in a little extra to cover the difference until you find a new roomate, you can get an additional job until you cover it, you may even be able to borrow money from freinds and family to help you through this and then pay them off as you can. You have options. Talk to a lawyer, read the lease, find out what the laws are in your area about leases (often times there is an exit clause irregardless of how many months you signed up for). You can do what I always tell myself when I am faced with a tough problem: "Work The Problem" Define it, examine it, find out options and courses of actions, talk to people, read, research, and make your situation better. What I LOVE about "working the problem" is that when I am done and I have solved it.. I feel really great about it.. About friends.. True friends, people you can count on through thick and thin are rare and precious. I imagine you may have found one or two in your life already but you will find more and your casual friends will change over time, but those really special people will become part of your family and you will likely never really loose them if you care for them and appreciate them and they do the same for you. Life is such an amazing and exciting (and scary!) adventure. I was born in the back woods of a fringe Canadian Province surrounded by cows and corn fields. Now I work in Boston for the 3rd largest Software company in the world solving problems that affect people all over the world. I have been single, married, divorced, single again and now soon married again! I have a wonderful son who is going to be a man soon and start his own adventure! I have loved and lost, I have fought and won and fought and lost. I have had incredible joy and incredible sadness. I have seen things you would beleive if I told you! And most importantly, I am not even close to being done! Take this problem in stride and know that you will be able to overcome it if you apply yourself and think and be good to your freinds and family. Take time to enjoy your life, in this moment, in this second, knowing that the next may bring joy or sadness or nothing much at all.. And that all of these things are threads in the tapestry of your life that you weave each and every second. The ups and downs, the adventures and trials all weave into it and make the final product a rich and interesting piece of human art. No one oo's and ahh's at boring, mono color carpet... But intricate, colorful rugs are always beautiful to behold. Happy Weaving Bro! Rob

I am agreement with Black. Although Tanks and various armoured vehicles have many advantages and capabilities, they do have issues with terrain. Rotor-based aircraft and VTOL technologies are more versatile than fixed-wing aircraft but they suffer from being very vulnerable to damage. The idea of a "Mech" is that it can have the agility and flexibility of a soldier but the raw toughness and striking power of a heavily armoured tank. Could you trip it? Well yes if you could find a materiel that was light weight enough to deploy quickly (Mechs can move quickly and in unpredictable ways) and still be strong enough to be able to resist the power it would have in it's legs. It's a pretty tall order! I think that Mechs have the advantage of being very flexible in the battlefield, being able to take advantage of opportunistic cover, difficult terrain like hills and mountains, as well as enabling a small number of troops to deliver a larger amount of ordnance and informaiton. Currently a lot of modern battlefield tactics in "Symmetric" warfare is about being able to rapidly move, deliver a payload and then move again. Tanks do well in this regard but do have limits in terms of the terrain they can cover. Artillery has more punch but requires more time to set up and fire. I think Mechs would come in many flavors and roles, Light Mechs for speed and scouting, medium mechs for heavier engagements and support roles similar to artillery and finally heavy mech that are designed to wade into the fray and punch the enemy hard while drawing fire at the same time. Having a platform that can Walk/Run across a wide range of terrain to a position, fire and then move again with little to no setup would add a degree of flexibility and responsiveness that would be very powerful.

ATI, Optimal Body Type no... But a good compromise between Mauneuverability, speed and balance. A great example is the Seque scooter. Now powered wheelchairs have been around for a while as have powered scooters but they both are limited in their need for fairly smooth, firm terrain to be able to travel over AND they have some restrictions in terms of turning arcs. The segue is revolutionary because it ofers the flexibilty of a bipedal system with the mechanical advantage in it's motors. I think Mechs would offer similar advantages using comprable (although scaled up) technologies. I think gyroscopes and sophisticaed feedback controllers and targetting systems would allow operators to be able to move, fire and recover large heavy weapons like missles, artillery and perhaps eventually energy weapons very accurately. Could a Mech be vulnerable to a direct hit on a leg...absolutely! Just as a Tank is vulnerable to a direct hit to a tread. But a Tank cannot "side step" like a mech could possibly do. A tank cannot "duck" behind cover making it harder to hit.. And frankly a Mech's body type is harder to hit than a tank. A Tank is wide and squat where a Mech is going to mimic the human form and have smaller target profiles spread out over a larger area. Yup... I'd be a Mech Pilot if'n I was to choose! *grin*

The Spider/Crab Body Type does have some advantages including redundancy of th elegs, and spreading out the weight as well as stability of the platform. I would think though that it would sacrifice some raw speed as there is more leg assemblies to move in a coordinated fashoin and each od the legs would have a smaller range of motion. In a support role though, I think it would be a great weapons pltform for heavy artillery or missle weapons.

Biglew, i just checked Matt's website and Wikipedia. He does indeed study BJJ and has a Black Belt under Renzo Gracie. Here is a link Serra Academy Most of the Original Gracie family still call their art BJJ although I have seen "Gracie JuJitsu" being advertised and I think there is some issue with one of the family members about that.

Greg, Great point... I was very disappointed in how "soppy" the movie was and out of character for Kubrick. Visually the movie was gorgeous and I thought Jude Law was wonderful but the story line kept tugging the same "I want to be loved by my Mommie" heart string and it got tiresome fast. And the ending was just over the top... Rob

Biglew, Aikido is a Japanese throwing art that focusses on redirection of the opponents energy. It is gentler than Jujitsu although it inherents many techniques from that art and does not rely on strength as much as Judo does. Steven Segal is a famous practicioner.

Biglew and EvilJ, Writing APPLICATIONS in Assembly is nuts. It's too tedious and unforgiving to write something as high level as a DB maintenance program.. But it is the way to go for low level routines and device drivers. The biggest Assembly program I ever wrote was about 1000 lines long. It was a microcode simulator for my Systems Design course. It read in a program written in a custom Assembly language and executed the instructions in a virtual machine with virtual registers, etc. It was very cool! But Oiy was that a tough course! Nowadays languages like C# and Java are the application languages of choice and utility languages like javascript allow you to enhance the UI on Web Pages very nicely. Adobe is trying to change the paradigm though with Flex and Flash and might shift the market in the near future..

Biglew, You talk about "leeching" of our articles but I would contend it would rather be "seeding". We WANt other people to see our content because it will encourage people to follow it back to the source and join up. I think the "open Kimono" approach works well here at Shuzak because we are such a small site without a brand recognition to preceed us. People need to "try before buying" here and get a sense of the community. It is that sense of community that is our biggest asset and that can ONLY be experienced by joining and participating. I appreciate your perspective but I think the easier we make it for visitors to see what makes this site great, the faster we will grow.
Shuzak's Collaborative Program - Posted By Rob Masson - Karma received: 1
Brilala, First of all thanks welcome to Shuzak and thanks for your comments! I like the idea of being able to meet other Shuzak members and facilitating that but to P0ss's point we also do want to protect members identity. Making your location an optional field helps in that endeavor. The fact that we can modify all the fields within the porfile does give us the flexibility to store/publish any information we choose to so sexual orientation, marital status, etc. can certainly go there. I think Shuzak is a platform for all kinds of social interaction both on-line as well as in the "real world". I would love to foster Regional Shuzak Meet and Greets as well as Geek Movie nights and Special Events. I think using this platform as a means for meeting people for romantic relationships is an inevitable (and wonderful) side effect of this being a social website. Shuzak is certainly not a "Geek Dating" website but it will certainly be the mechanism that helps people connect on many levels and some of them will be romantic.

Biglew, Welcome to Shuzak! Your story is rough but I suspect not uncommon... It's never easy when the physical chemistry just is not there.. *sigh*
Sex - Posted By Rob Masson - Karma received: 0
Brilala, Point well taken that your marital status is not you bank account number however given how easy it is to pull up informaiton about people it behooves everyone to be cautious about what they reveal. And yes men (and women) are infamous for using the Internet to meet women despite being in a relationship however I would contend that he intention of Shuzak is to create a stable and non-transient community where people establish and maintain their credibility over the long run. Clearly people who are using this place as a mechanism for trolling for "dates" outside of their current relationship will likely be exposed.. Just as they would in their actual neighborhood. Again I think that Shuzak is flexible enough so that the User Profile canbe adapted to store one's relationship status, orientation, etc. and we can have associated protocols and areas that are designed to facilitate meeting new people. People who choose to not publish this information will not be invited to participate in those areas OR will be asked to leave them. If you yourself are finding that too many people are flirting with you without revealing their status you can choose to ignore them until they do so.

Biglew, Thanks for sharing! Personally I find it enjoyable and my partner does too so it's all good. It's all about perspective. I have been very lucky in that I have never had an injury that has completely side-lined me. I have badly sprained an ankle in Aikido that affected how I could train for several months and it is still a little weak but it never stopped me. I do however regularly have aches, pins and strains that limit how intensely I can participate. MY knees and shoulder are the real tough ones but lately I have been dogged with issues with my hips. Interesting.. You know I get the idea of thinking of a ship or a car as a tangible thing and assigning it a gender (All my Cars have been female in my mind) but not a web site. I think of Shuzak as more of a collective, a community and as such it has no one "sex" but rather is a composite of the personalities that comprise it. It would be more "feminine" if the magority of the community were female, or more "masculine" of the opposite were true but I would never endow it with a fixed gender... Just my thought.. I'lll cross post this in P0ss's new topic.

Well I would contend that Women are just as likely to be Geeks in their fields of choice as men are.. That Geekdom is an approach to life, it is being passionate about the things that interest you and is not constrained by subject or gender. So the purpose of this question is to determine simply if there is something in the structure or capabilities of this community that would make more women feel like sharing their expereinces and ideas with the group. I tossed out suggestions just off the top of my head as a brianstoeming exercise so perhaps I would encourage subsequent posters to take the same approach, contribute your ideas and thoughts, not your criticisms at this point..

P0ss, Actually thre is a movement in Biology to reclassify the species based on their genetic information not just the actually observed characteristics. Currently ALL life on the planet shares a common set of base genes that trace back to the original life on the planet but closely related species may share a startlingly high degree of genetic materiel. I suspect that within the spedcies and within a given population the differences would be very small compared to the overall genome but given that we use DNA testing as proof of identity clearly each individual has several key factors. I understand that in many states, the restrictions on inter-family marriages has been listed so that you can indeed decide to marry your 1st cousin if you so choose. This may be a reflection that our curent society has diversified so much that the risk of excessive recessive genetic expression has been minimized.. Fascinating angle... Worth digging into a little more..

Jawad, Well if I may play "product manager" for a moment, I think we need to settle on a couple of themes first that will direct and drive our feature choices. this helps to prioritize and focus the discussion. I would suggest the following: 1/ Improving Navigation - Making it easier to find topics based on keywords, User, topic, date, etc. 2/ Expanding Capabilities - Creating new ways that we can share our interests and passions. We already have mechanisms for sharing interesting videos but what about pictures (beyond our avatars) and music as well as collorative tools (or links to collaborative tools). Clearly there are a lot of sticky issues with any of this but it would greatly enhance the versatility of Shuzak and increase membership conversion and rentention. 3/ Community Building - We need to foster the social aspect of this group beyond simply discussion threads. This can be in many forms from scheduled chats, to face-to-face meetings to having a Welcoming Committee for new members. User Growth is the fuel for our success and we need to actively pursue it. This should include some kind of on-line Marketing Campaign BTW. 4/ Reporting & Administration - To assist admins and Community Leaders we need the ability to be able to find out who has joined, what is popular, what is tanking, who is contributing and making a difference and who is being a trouble maker. and we need a way to control and deal with people who are a detriment to the community. I know I have seen suggestions that fall into all of these categories/themes. Have I missed anything?

Ok...real life horror story.. When I was in college I took computer science and one of the required classes was systems programming. We took a "bottom up" approach, understanding how microcode was implemented and controlled by assembly and then on up to an actual operating system. The professor was a genius and went to Waterloo (Canada's version of MIT) and actually wrote a microscode simulator when he was there. The thing was that he did it for FUn and as a result use only languages that were available without Mainframe Chargebacks (Remember long ago you had a certain amout of time allocated to you on the mainframe and it was precious!) Well it turned out the limited his choices considerably and as a result he was forced to implement his simulator in COBOL.. COBOL with some C routines compiled in for the Bitwise operations.. For those not familiar with COBOL it is incredibly wordy and a language designed specifically for business processing NOT low level system programming. It's like trying to do surgery with a chainsaw. But it worked... man was it twisted, but it worked. We had to review through it with him before we went off and wrote our own simulator.. luckily we got to write ours in System/370 Assembler.. Who would have thought that using Assembler was the EASIER of two options! *grin*

ATI, Leveraging the existing content for new users (as well as old ones) is a great point. A cheap way to do just that is the Tag cloud or a similar mechanism where the new User can list all their interests and then we can build a navigational device based on the tags that match those interests as well as suggest communities perhaps.

When I was growing up my grandparents used to make a huge breakfast on Sunday mornings for the whole family. Being from Eastern Canada our cuisine was largely influenced by scottish and English immigrants so alongside the bacon and beans would be Blood Pudding, which is like a Keilbassa but is made with congealed blood of the slaughtered animal. I used to love it! I still can find it at good Irish pubs for breakfast but they usually call it Rashers or Irish Sausage.. *smile* Pass the Haggis please! *LOL*

I think that there has been a "Karma Correction" going on as new people join, some people leave and the community tries to find it's new balance. I think there are a lot of great suggestions about what to do with Karma and implmenting them will help provide some context into it's usage and purpose. To constantine's point though I think we are hitting a tipping point on the content side. right now we are essentially building a "Heap" where newer content gains the most attention. this is not bad but it does tend to narrow the focus of our discussions and submissions to just those most active or newly added topics/communities. I think we need to rethink that approach and see if we can create a more "cross-sectional" approach for Users where they can see topics across all their defined interests and groups of freinds and easily traverse those topics to keep the discussions alive and relevant. I really like the new History Tab immensely and I think that is definately a step in the right direction. I think enhancing the search and perhaps leveraging tagging will also help this process as well. P0ss and ATI have been talking about setting up a mechanism for RSS feeds which I think is brilliant and would also help keep topics alive. I think we also have to figure out how to grow more and grow in diversity. I think having disparate perspectives and interests would broaden the discussions a lot and help us get to the critical mass point. Maybe that's marketing, maybe that is partnering with another site, I'm not sure. BTW if you like this post... Gimme some Karma baby! *LOL*

Ummmm Sid.... Using the terrain to your advantage to overcome a MASSIVE disparity in force size is INGENIOUS Tactics and INCREDIBLY Brave but to your point it is NOT Strategy. The STATEGIC aspect was that facing the Persian Army there and damn near turning them back delayed them several days and made the army question the infallibility of Xerces thus laying the seeds of their eventual defeat by the Athenians. Now I would agree that the combat art of the Greeks was not very pretty and it was all about the Phalanx and the protection it offerred the soldiers within it, but it did require rigorous training and discipline to maintain it against an agressive opponent. I think the Spartans that died at Thermopalae were incredibly brave, incredibly loyal and should always be remembered with honor and respect. We Will Remember!

*Begin GEEK Moment* Ok... There are SEVERAl classification systems available but the most widely adopted currently is a 6 Kingdom Breakdown into: Eubacteria Archaebacteria Protista Funji Plantae Animalia *End GEEK Moment* The first two are a refinement of the Bacteria Kingdom, Protista are critters that are somewhere between plant and animal but remain single cell createurs or somple multi-cell creatures, Fungi you put on salads and rocks, Plants you smell and Animals you eat... *grin* So yes Lacey, Your Paper Wasps are Animals.. Unless you are talking about Wasps made out of Paper in which case they belong to the Kingdom Dementia and you should probably start taking your meds? *grin*
Mammals, Reptiles, Fish, Birds - Posted By Rob Masson - Karma received: 3
@P0ss, you are probably right... I was using the current classification scheme in place that covers only those most recent animals. @ATI, There are several classification schemes. I went over to Wikipedia from the low doan and it was very informative. There is a new movement to remove kingdom's and put into place domains that represent groupings based on commonalities in DNA and that reduces down to 3 magor domains I believe. It is an interesting read! Here is the link: [link href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_%28biology%29] Mutual of omaha's Wild kingdoms[/link]

@Joe, The language is called "Brainfuck". It is interesting although I think mostly a curiosity. This is little better than programming microcode. It is VERY primitive and an interesting way to examine the fundamentals of programming but offers little in terms of practical use. Also the syntax reminds me of APL which used greek characters to define a number of different functions that can be appied to vectors and matrices. It was very powerful but a bitch to actually maintain.

It's true! I think that movies based on Comics have a good pedigree due to the fact that the storylines of most comics have faced this same challenge over and over. How many villans has Spiderman faced? how do you month after month keep your readers engaged. While there have certianly been colossal Comic Book Movie flops, it is a model that has great potential for a long franchise!

Sabina, I think the "What I Hate about Shuzak" topic name is meant to be completely "Tongue in cheek". Clearly one of the many things that makes Shuzak fun and great is that the people who contribute the most REALLY do love it and pur a lot of time and attention into it. But in the spirit of constant improvement we all realize that there is a lot of work to do and encourage a very open and frank discussion about what is good and bad and to not consider anything sacrosanct from criticism or improvement. So no one really HATES Shuzak... And we all LOVE Jawad... We are jus tnot sfraid to voice our suggestions for improving and growing this wonderful community.

Reloaded and REvolutions had their moments but they didn't have the same effect on me as the first one did. Mind you it is HARD to do that in a sequel but it can be done. Actually I thought the Animatrix Shorts were VERY well-done and took the story into new areas and filled inthe back-story VERY well. But when you look at the Sequels to Raiders of the Lost Ark, clearly it is possible to take the same characters and the same premise (Nazis, Whips, Archeology) into interesting and fun directions... If you have Sean Connery in your cast that is.. *grin*

@Joseph, So you feel that it is more Logical to beleive that the complexity of the Universe is created by a Supernatural Being with a good eye for the esthetic and the ability to sculpt a Universe than it is to beleive that there is an overall modelthat dictates how matter and energy interact and can create large complex structures based on the evidence we observe daily that this does indeed happen. Sorry Joseph.. I don't follow that argument. I certainly can respect that you may beleive in a supernatural being and that is your right to do so however I would contend that Logic cannot be used to justify that belief.

I think that there are some great examples of sequels that actually met or exceeded the original. It's rare but it does happen. My best sequel List: - Aliens - Alien Resurrection - Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back - Star Wars: Return of the Jedi - X2 and X3 - Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan - Clerks 2 I think that making a great sequel is about the director having a powerful and distinct vision that connects the movie to the franchise but takes it to a new and interesting place.

Jared, I agree totally that science has a LOT of work to do to fill in the gaps but we incrementally advance our understanding and fill in more and more. It is the process of examining the evidence, positing a theory and testing that theory that I believe in. Certainly Philosphers have posited many wonderful arguments as to the existance or non-existance of God but they are all meta-physical in their nature and of course do not follow any FORMAL system of Logic because of course we cannot ASSERT the big scary stuff. *grin* And to answer your question, if there were a new Religion that incorporates a Supernatural Being AND incorporates all Observations I would STILL not follow it because it requires THAT being. All the evidence I see, my observations of the Universe and it's laws indicate that it is complex, mysterious, strange and completely explainable.

According to the Canadian system even if they are accompanied by and Adult they cannot be admitted if they are under 14! ARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!! So we saw Ghost Rider instead... @Lacey, To build on joe's excellent and cpmrehansive answer, allow me to focus only on gravitation (that's what cool Physics Geeks call it) at the Macro level and ignore quantum gravitation for now. Space is not empty, it is not the absence of anything, it actually has a structure and a "shape" if you will. It's AT LEAST 4 dimensional although it may be more than that, and time is one of those dimensions. The easy way to imagine it is to picture one of those really cool play structures you see in a playground that is made up of steel pipes interlaced so you get a bunch of cubes formed that you can crawl through. Imagine one of those floating in space but the steel is REALLY thin and it goes on indefinately in all directions forming this huge 3D grid. That is Space. Got it? ok.. now along comes Matter. Matter effects Space by twisting it. So if in that huge grid I put something like a planet, then all of a sudden the lines (pipes) within that areas are bent and twisted into it very densly and pipes around that object are effected as well, bending towards it. The further you get away from the planet the less the pipes are bent but it's effects reach way out AND those magnituge of those effects can be calculated using the Newton's and Einstien's Laws of Gravitation. So what does all this bending mean? Well when another body travels close to the planet, it tries to follow the lines at straight as it can. However the lines are bent towards the planet and the approaching body "falls" towards it. The Heavier the object, the steeper the lines, the faster the Fall. That is Gravitation in a nutshell.

@Nadeem, First of all what a great Post! Mad Karma Bro! @Jawad, I think you have hit on the key difference here. Allow me to qoute you: My thesis is that scientists (including geeks) tend to think in terms of logic. Because they are intelligent, they believe that their approach to problems is right I would enhance this a little and postulate that we as a group beleive in critical thinking whose fundamental postulate is that there is no truth without evidence and that any theory or postulate can be disproved with evidence. This means that we only accept things that we can prove and are willing to be proven wrong. It is a scary world view because it means that things can change suddenly. Religion builds upon Faith which asks it's followers to beleive in something without ANY evidence and indeed to continue to beleive in it despite any evidence that attempts to disprove it. In many ways it is the very Antithesis of critical thinking. It is certainly this fundamental difference that has made me come to the conclusion years ago that I could not be a person of faith, and good or bad I needed to live in a Universe that self-contained and explicable, even if that explanation was beyond my current grasp. We as a Race HAVE to reach out beyond our knowledge and strive for more or we will simply stagnate and die. Eden wasn't a paradise, it was a graveyard and the tree of life was our way out.

Constantine, I would say that to the "Critical Thinker", saying that you cannot disprove somthing is insufficient to say that it is true. As you pointed out, it is difficult (if not impossible currently) to disprove any divine being. But in a "rational"/"Naturalistic" world view you only beleive in what can be proven theoretically or empiracly. I beleive in Electron Flow because we have models that accurately predict it's behavior AND I have been electrocuted before. Faith and Religion ask us to beleive in something that has no Theoretical or evidentiary basis AND keeps asking us to beleive that it can ascribe various events with natural explanations as evidence of the divine. I think as "Critical Thinkers" we balk at that kind of causal liberty and that sours our palette for organized religious dogma.

@Joe, That should work! You should also be able to pass any arguments that you coolected with the GUI objects directly to the C Lirary functions you need without having to send them to an intermediary file. Additionally you coulf potentially get the output of those C calls into a GUI object to review the results immediately but that may be more involved depending upon how the librariues are written.

@ATI, It's a great point and I have seen some great mechnisms for doing just that! It would be similar to the "Related Items" capability except the Tagging engine would make it's best guesses about tags based on word frequency and previous tag associations it knows about. It would then suggest terms and allow you to accept all of them, some of them or add your own in.

Gringo, I am a huge fan of a couple of different study aids. One is a line of laminated aids that fit within a standard 81/2 x 11" folder. I think the brand name is QuickStudy. They cover a huge range of topics and summarize them into 4-6 pages all laminated and ready for use in studying. They are great cheat sheets. For more depth and exercises I really like Schaulm's Notes/Guides. They are availabel in any topic imaginable and have lots of exercises and reviews of basic theory. Additionally I might suggest (and PLEASE do not take this as an insult!) "Trig for Dummies". I LOVE the "For Dummies" series as they cover subjects very clearly and simply and have great examples. They write very good books (and I Read a LOT of books!) and you should consider them as a great resource for your library. Here is a link to their Website: Trig for Dummies If you were looking for something les..well printed.. then wikibooks has an open source Book on Trig here: Trigonometry It covers all the basics although it is a little sparse on examples. Good Luck!

ATI, when I Lucid Dream I usually try one of two things... One I try and use telekenisis.. I rmember dreaming that I was playing pool and becoming lucid and trying to control the paths of the balls (but not the giant margaurita drinking Iguanas that I was playing against..*grin*). The other thing I try to do is fly/levitate. The hard part is not tripping the "hey you can't do that here!" response which immediately pops me out of the dream. The other situation I often find myself lucid dreaming in is the dreaded "showing up for Work Naked" dream. I usually catch myself in this one and remind myself that it's a dream, OR that it is perfectly normal and that other people don't mind that I am naked. I just hope sometime that I don't THINK that I am dreaming and show up for work naked and ACTUALLY end up being awake... So hard to recover from that one! *LOL*

@P0ss and ATI, i have been noodling this over all weekend. I REALLY like the idea of expanding our RSS capabilities and LOVE the idea of being able to subscribe to groupings of Communities and Topics that are included in them via that mechanism. Separating and categorizing the very flat structure that is Shuzak right now has some great advantages in terms of being able to find topics and update members based on their subscribed interests. I am just concerned about the traditional problems of setting up a formal taxonomy which are all about scalability and the rather subjective and sensitive topic about categorization. There are ways to mitigate this thru cross-linking but it had limitations too. One of the really big lessons in Collaboration Software is that cross polination yields amazing results in terms of innovation and breaking down barriers between groups but does lead to issues with finding information. Building formal heirarchies allows for easier retrieval but tend to isolate groups and often leads to duplication of information and discussions thereby dilluting the benefits of collaborating in the first place. The other lesson that we have learned from Content mgmt Software is that enforcing and maintaining a formal taxonomy on content is incredibly time consuming. Te Administration work can grow enourmously if the Users are not properly educated on how to classify the content that they are creating. I worry that by putting into place a Formal heirarchy that we could be committing future administrators to a great deal of work in terms of managing the location of threads and trying to croo-polinate them between communities and that eventually they will give up and the we will end up with Solios of Users that never share informaiton. This seems like a sure fire Communitty Killer for a Social Networking Site. There may be an alternative however. Tagging is becoming very popular because it offers a potential solution that brings the strengths of both approaches to bear. Tagging allows you to make some general categorizations about a topic or a response but not be limited to simply one. Additionally Users can further decorate the posting with additional information that provides further context about the materiel and facilitates richer search and traversal results. So initially when you create a community you have to assign it to at least one Existing Affliation Tag (Science, Paranormal, Humanities, mathematics, etc.) or add an Affiliation Tag if one does not exist. Users can then add additional tags to the Community as well as individual topics to further describe the content therein. This could even be expanded to the "tenor" of the group, with some groups being marked as being more "serious" or "playful" depending on the subject matter and seriousness of the discussions. A Tagging approach would also be more Organic, allowing the groupings of Communities to grow and shift over time as new groupings became relevant. Having overlapping groupings would not be a problem as the nature of tagging it to provide conetn to search and traversal, similar to a Wiki but to preserve the uniqueness of the actual information itself. Content Mgmt and Collaboraiton as an Industry is moving rapidly to embrace this approach and it is radially changing a lot of traditional applications. It is in many ways a radical idea but certainly parallels how we view Databases nowadays. This shift in approach is very similar to the move from heirarchical DB's in the 60's and 70's to Relational and Object Oriented DB's we use now.

Joe, i think you are going the wrong way here.. Embedding Python in C impossible as far as I know.. Python is an interepted language while C is compiled. Unleess you have a cross-compiler to translate Python into raw C it's never going to work. You can however use C libraries from within Python apps so you could use Python to do the UI aspects of an application and then make calls out for the heavy lifting in C libraries.

@joe, allright.. i am officially DUMB! After posting that last comment and feeling all happy and smug in my imperfect knowledge of the subject I took a moment and pulled a Python book off of my shelf and actually READ a little of it. It turns out that you CAN call into Python from a C program1 Holy Moley! Thre is an Embedded Call API within Python that allows you to make calls into and run commands from a C program! How about that! There is a chapter on it in the O'Reilly book that gives some examples.

ATI, I think the challenge is that as soon as you start putting into place formal categorization schemes you largely buy into all the challenges that come with them.. It's a "In for a Penny, In for a Pound" kind of a deal. I think tagging has the benefits I mentioned above plus it can be implmented in such a way that it is functionally identical to having Meta-Communities. Nothing says that the UI can't represent the Tags as hierarchies if that ends up being a more intuitive and convenient way to access the content for users. What does change is that the Tags contain the categorization informaiton and that it can change and grow over time. The UI redraws it's representation whith every access and therefor survives change more robustly and dynamically AND can easily be altered to reflect different access schemes like a Wiki say.

@P0ss, Well for someone who is REALLY interested in Theoretical Math I don't think it would be a dry topic at all. Mind You I think that the percentage of the population that finds Number Theory REALLY exciting is very limited but to those who do, Party on! I know for a fact that for many people my interests are INCREDIBLY boring! *grin* But that's what makes us individuals, we have different tastes, likes and dislikes. I think to be successful we neeed to have a mixture of dofferent forms of interaction and chat and discussion threads are inherently differnet beasts. A Discussion thread is an Asyncronous form of Communication and collaoration. It allows the participants to record their thoughts and have a conversation that takes place over an extended period of time and without everyone being present. But that also means that it happens slowly. "Chatting" is a Syncronous form of Communication and tends to be more free flowing and ad hoc. It requires that all parties be present and is typically subject to the ebb and flow of any lively converstation, topics will emeerge, be bantied and drift off, there will be cross-talk, thre will be heated debate.. It's very organic. And it is very compelling! I have digressed a little from your questions and I hope you can indulge me a little. I wanted to make sure we defined these forms of communication before I responded. Chat and Discussion Threads do not compete with one another, they compliment one another. Interesting Discussions will attract constituents with an interest in the Topic area. Interesting and informative Posts within those threads will advance the conversation and compell the members to return to visit them. It's why Blogs, Wikis and Web Pages work so well and are so popular. Chat addresses our needs for more instant gratification and fulfills our social imperitive that we all have to one degree or another. Being able to chat allows us to "hang out" and participate in conversation without any preset topics or agenda. It is FUN! Both of these forms of communicaiton co-exist peacefully already. Most of us have email, web browsers, phones and Chat clients and yet we manage to contribute in a meaningful way on a daily basis. Some days probably more than others *grin* but you get my point I hope. I do not beleive that having a Chat capability on Shuzak distracts from the ongoing discussions, I think it simply enriches the overall experience and opens up our community to new and richer forms of interaction and collaboration.

JAwad, Have you read the book "The Long Tail"? You really should as it pertains directly to this kind of issue. The basic premise is that traditioanlly businesses focus on the top 20% of a constituency. They look at the most popular items/markets and focus only on that. THe remaining 80%of the market does not have enough in commmon to be able to effective target them. But the Internet has changed that. Companies like Amazon can go after that much larger but fragmented marketplace becqause they can easily adapt and market to niche groups. Shuzak has the potential to be a "Long Tail" kind of application. While the "Top 20%" of geeks may be CS and Math Geeks, Geeks come in all flavors (Music, Writing, Film, TV, Cars, you name it). They share a commonality in that they love to learn and explore and are not afraid of demonstrating their interests in front of others, whatever those interests may be. The Magic that makes a Social NEtwork site more than a Discussion List or yet another Forum is that you can meet, and interact with other people in a very loose format and let that dynamic drive the topics and discussions. To be technical, there is no formally defined "taxonomy" of topics and Users can decide what to talk about. And frankly another aspect of that dynamic is social interaction between men and women! It is natural that there will be flirtation and frivolity, we are wired to do that. I love that Shuzak is embracing and glorifying the "Geek Ethos" and celebrating all kinds of Geeks by bringing together some of the best and brightest in the world. We have members across the entire planet and I think that is simply astounding and marvelous! Let's not loose sight that this should be a fun and cool place to hang outand chat and meet new freinds as well as discuss interesting subjects.

@GRingo Are we really here to do "Work"? I love the threads because it gives me an opportunity to think about a question or someone else's response and really try and craft something I am proud of. Chat is more of an instant gratification thing that allows me to hang and goof with other members. But the threads are never "Work" to me. IF the threads are slowing down then I think it is up to the creators to either change the topic to something more compelling or to jazz up the discussion by posing new ideas/questions.

P0ss.. it's an interesting idea but I think the "Silly" Meta community is a little condescending. The problem with this is that we get into a Taxonomy debate and then you have to make a lot of hard decisions about what goes where. So does a debate on Quantum Computers go into Quantum Physics or Computer Science? I am not saying that having any structure or categorization scheme is bad, just that setting up silos always leads to tough decisions and compromises. What about instead using Tags to createa a Folkonomy and then incorporate a TAg Clound into Shuzak to facilitate Searching and Browsing of Communities. Then when you select the Tag "Science" you will see all the communities that have and affinity / association with that keyword.

@Ryan, True we need balance but I am not sure "Policing" the chat with a Bot is necessarily the right idea. There is always going to be a subsection of the community that tend to produce the most amount of content, these are the Writers and Politicians, and Artits of our community. The vast magority will offer critique and criticism, will agree or disagree and will reward or ignore based on their tastes and opinions. Chat is a way for them to have voice and to socialize.. This is afterall a Social site.

@Ryan, I love the idea of being able to subscribe to an RSS Feed of Community content but why should it be limited to only a "Super Community"? Why not allow Feeds to individual communites?
Suggest Shuzak! - Posted By Rob Masson - Karma received: 1
@Ryan, EXCELLENT Post! I think you are right that having a "Negative" Karma that facilitates balancing of posters that contribute and those that distract.
Suggest Shuzak! - Posted By Rob Masson - Karma received: 1
ATI, Posting in Multiple Communities helps but does not solve the problem. It does not solve the problem that other communities can come along later and have relevance to a posting but will not be linked. It also has the problem that with any Taxonomy there are rules and judgements about what should go where. Even with being able to post in Multiple Communities there is going to be a "administration" overhead AND there is a need to educate the contributors about the classification scheme. All this overhead tends to have some side effect. Whoever manages the communities tends to become victims of their own success as growth in the community typically creates growth in their workload. Trying to reduce this work by actively teaching the contributors the classification scheme result in a reduced growth in content because inevitably some members do not understand or disagree with the classification scheme Or we end up with redundant pockets of informaiton. I don't mean to sound like I am completely against organizing the information becaus eI am Not. But my experience in this particular problem (I am a software Architect that helps to design Collaboration and Document Management software) tells me that there is a very sharp "law of diminishing returns" here. Solutions like Tagging and NAvigation schemes that leverage that Meta-Data are demonstrating an alternative approach to this problem by not forcing a formal taxonomy on the content but by allowing the community itself to label it as it sees fit and then organically and dynamically cluster, group and traverse that information. Think Wikis and the World Wide Web. And having a "Silly" community by ANY name is still condescending because it means that someone has deemed that some topics are more "important" than others. One man's Silliness may be another Man's Serious Discourse. I am not saying that anyone is going to become enlightened reading posts like "LOL @ CheekyBunny", but my love of Classic Sci-Fi is important to me and others and should not be relegated to the "Kiddies Table of Topics". If we really want to grow this community into something interesting and relevant and maybe even influential we have to take an Inclusive and Embracing approach to the Whole of our Constituency and resist the temptation to be judgemental and elitist at all costs.

@Ryan, I see that.. And it makes sense. I used to participate in a Martial Arts community site that has a Reputation Point mechanism where you could give Positive and Negative Rep Points. Martial Arts topics (and the practitioners that participate in them!) are NOTORIOUSLY inflamatory especially around issues of lineage and certification. The rep approach worked VERY well as people who made outlandish claims were quickly labelled as having poor reputations and their posts were almost univerally ignores. Is there a chance for Abuse? Certainly but I think th elaw of large numbers states that as long as the abusers are in the monority then things will even out and the reliable, fair minded users will grow in status and those that abuse or detract from the community will become irrelevant.

ATI, Clearly something like "The Church of Rob" is a completely silly diversion *grin* but things like Flirting and Off-topic Jokes are going to happen in threads no matter what. You can certainly set up areas that are designed to be "Social Settings" like a Lounge or something but in effect that is basically what the Chat feature provides. People are going to have fun and we should expect them to have fun. Certainly people should be dissuaded from hijacking threads and pulling them completely off topic but I get this sense that some people think we can corral up all the "non-serious" discussionas and interactions into a separate area and I am saying that having SOME of that frivolity and dynamic spread across all topics helps to make the site compelling. Forgive me ATI and P0ss if I seem passionate about this topic but frankly I LIKE the people on this site and I like the friendships that I am forging and the creativity it is sparking in me. I truly beleive that what has awakened my Muse here @ Shuzak is this blend of brilliant ideas and uproarious humour. As silly as it is, the Church of Rob has made me think hard about real issues in Morality and Religion! Arguing the finer points about Classic Sci-Fi has made me really think about Man's future and of the path that Entertainment is heading in. The embrace of My Muse is so wonderful, so enjoyable and I am so proud of what it allows me to achieve here that I cannot help but be passionate about protecting her fickle affections.. Forgive me brothers if I offend or seem harsh but I can harly contain my exhuberance and excitement *smile*

Hehehehehehehehehehehe... Well so many GREAt suggestions and many fine films (I'm dubious about a couple that Philbo suggested *grin*). But folks remember we are trying to identify the CLASSICS. These are the seminal works, the defining films. @Scorcho, perhaps we can take Star Trek II:The Wrath of Khan as it revived that franchise after the lackluster performance of Star Trek:The Motion Picture. @Javed2, can we really call The Matrix a classic? I ask the question in all earnesty because I considered it for my original list and worried about whether "classic" is as much about history as content. I think The Matrix redefined Action movies and upped the ante on Movies with a Twist. I guess from that perspective it is a "defining film". Anyone opposed to puting it on the List?

I am a huge fan of Texas Hold'em Poker. I play in some neighborhood games occasionally and have done well and I have also played in Vegas. I play on-line regularly on my X-Box and on my PC but never for money. I have been down to the Casino's in Conneticut once but the wait at the tables was too long. I'm planning on going back though. I find the mechanics of the game wonderful and because you are playing against the other players and not the house, then you can actually walk away from the table with some serious cash, especially if you are good at reading other people.

Sphinx, What a GREAT episode! We finally get to decide if Mr. Bennett is a good guy or a bad guy (Bad guy turned Good!) and what the deal was with the Haitian. How cool was it that more of the back story about Invisible Dude was introduced! Christopher Eccelson ROCKS! And Hiro's Dad is part of THIS?!?!?!?!?! That's a wild twist! I can buy Radioactive Dude being suppressed with drugs, but not sure how Clair's Mom and Brother manage to not get killed now that they have seen so much... Actually half the neighborhood would need to get offed.. *grin* Matt clearly is going to become Mr. Bennett's new partner whcih is interesting because he clearly knows a lot about What Bennett knew with regards to Clair's powers... How is he not going to blow Bennetts story if he get probed by the other psychic lady? hmmmmm... Anyway I am VEYY impressed with the writing and it is reminding me more and more of Lost.. Which I also love.

@Sphinx, They only alluded to the woman with the Dark Brown hair having similar powers so we will see but clearly she is to be a character going forward. Of course she may have loyalties of her own! I didn't realize that they had changed actors for the role of the Haitian! How did I miss that! And I think you are right, Radioactive dude will play a part of the story to come and not locked in a room as a lab rat. He clearly is angry and primed for vengence. I will be curious about how the story with Mohinder unfolds going forward. Clearly Sylar can't kill too many people without Mohinder figuring out who he is! Peter and Nathan are interesting characters. Nathan seems to have a muc more humanitarian side but is goaded into being ruthless by his mother while Peter wears his heart on his sleeve because he has been coddled all his life. They are both trying to complete their personalities and fighting their mothers influence to do so. Yup.. some great writing here!

@Matt, Ohh you sly fox! I almost fell pell mell into that well of ambiguity! *grin* I went to Wikipedia and found that SF is extremely hard to define in a hard sense. Here is a set of characteristics that can be used as a guide: "Science fiction often involves one or more of the following elements: - A setting in the future or on an alternative time line. - A setting in outer space or involving aliens or unknown civilizations. - The discovery or application of new scientific principles, such as time travel or psionics, or new technology, such as nanotechnology, faster-than-light travel, robots, etc. - Political or social systems different from those of the known present or past. A more complete set of definition can be found here: What is Sci-Fi Does this mean that Sci-Fi overlaps with Fantasy.. Well yes. Does this mean that Sci-Fi overlaps with Horror.. Well yes. I think in most cases though we can apply judgement to mkae separations so that for example Conan the Barbarian is truly a work of Fantasy, as is The Lord of The Rings or Labirynth. Saw will never be confused as being a Sci-Fi movie nor will the nightmare on elm Street or Poltergeist. Does Godzilla qualify as Sci-fi? Yes. Does Alien? Yes. Could they also be labelled as Horror Movies.. Yes. Does that clear everything up for you? No. *LOL*

Scorcho, You know... You make a good point. Do all the Star Wars movies represent "defining films". No not really. Certainly the first one does though so if we were to trim it down then I would have to say the first Star Wars Movie (Sorry Lacey... Caught in my own rules here.. *smile*). Would you agree the ST:TWOK is the right choice? And Yeah, I think "The Matrix" should be added to the List Dammit! It's a Modern Classic! *grin*

Interesting problem... How to crown the King Geek (or Queen!) in a Kingdom (Queendom?) of Geeks... Tough Call here! Perhaps it is easier to think about the greatest Geek in all of History.. I like ATI's nomination of Sir Isaac Newton.. His geek rep was extraordinary and his insight was Profound! But we will also have to consider the most popular face of Geekdom, albert Einstein! The picture of him sticking out his tongue is CLASSIC! And Dr. Hawking is definately in that running too! Can we include Geeks from fiction? If so we can include Spock, Scotty, Mouse, Samantha Carter, and so many others... And what about the Old School Geeks! Like Ptolemy, Aristotle, and Euclid? Ahhh but you know I think I have come to my answer in this path of musings.. It is he who has given us our motto, our most treasured expression: Eureka! Archimedies Baby! He is the baddest Geek in Town, EVER! I vote for Archimedes!
Geeks - Posted By Rob Masson - Karma received: 3
DS, Well it is an interesting issue. First of all let's set the context. If we are defining Pragmatic in the most casual sense then anyone can be pragmatic in their everyday life irregardless of their religion. Pragmatism in that sense simply means being willing to do the required thing to get through the situation. But Pragmatism on a more philosophical scale is a little different. In a sense, as a Bright, I think of Pragmatism as being the key to beleiveing in a Naturalistic view of the Universe in which an external, supernatural entity is not required to explain anything. Pragmatism leads one to a very practical, explainable view of the Universe and does not accept any Dogma. Most organized religions have some basic tenets that they view as untouchable and rely on Faith in their followers to uphold those beliefs. A pragmatism will always look at new contradictory evidence and be willing to revise their world view to accomodate it and as a result has little room for Faith or Dogma. I would also contend that being a Pragmatist also leads one to realize the value of Tolerance. Intolerance ultimately can only lead to conflict and a less than optimal outcome.

I was only ever unemployed once, during the infamous Internet Bubble Crash. I was laid off in June of 2001, broke up with my girlfreind who I was living with in July and moved into my new Apartment in September. I was still in a great state of mind as despite the crash the job Market was still allright and I was planning on having no problem finding work. I was unpacking and settling in to my new apartment with my new roomate on Sept. 11 when the World Trade Centers were hit and everything in the northeast came to a grinding halt. I was a Canadian Citizen working in the US and that was not a good thing during that time. It took me until December to find work and because of certain aspects of my Visa I was not eligible for Unemployment.. It was some rough times! I was glad for friends and family and their kindness to me when I needed it so badly.

Mmmmmm... Porn... I too am a fan of Porn. I have a few things that really do it for me and tend towards porn that caters to it. I REALLY love women with beautiful legs wearing stockings. There are a couple of directors that share that appreciation like Micheal Ninn and Andrew Blake. But Lesbo porn does little for me.. I want to see Men and Women going at it. I also really like classic porn. There was something very different about the mood of those movies that I find charming, innocent and sexy. I have always been a fan of Ginger Lynn, Nina Hartley and Ashlyn Gere. I also love watching women who ejaculate and there is a growing body of work in this particular niche. Well if you are still reading this and haven't run away yelling "TMI!" then allow me to say that much to my surprise many of the women I have dated really enjoyed Porn! It was something we enjoyed together like any other sexual toy. And having been to a couple of Porn Conventions I would say that MANY of the Porn stars I have met were very intelligent business minded women who enjoyed what they were doing.

I will say though that films like "Bloodsport" and "Enter the Ninja" and ALL the Bruce Lee movies tempered the "spiritual aspects" of the art with a more pragmatic "ass kikckin" theme! *grin* @P0ss, I think you have captured the essence of the disappointment with the Lucas body of work. The first Three (I guess really the Middle Three) were completely epic and breathtaking and transported us to an amazing Universe. But the prequels were so disjointed and pedestarian. They always seemed to be rushing to cram in details and explanations and ignored that there really was an amazing story that should have been told. I didn't need an explanation of what made the force work, I just needed Liam Neeson to be a Jedi Knight (which I thought he did actually rather well DESPITE the direction). Great movies are about great stories, and they can oddur even in a venue where we already "know the ending". A great director takes us along an amazing journey with Chracters not factoids and George Lucas seemed to have forgotten that critical elements.. Oh yeah and the Frack'n Jar Jar Binks... Puh-LEASE!

Matt, It's cheesy, and it's a little silly now... But put "Enter The Ninja" on that list. also add "Master Killer' (you may find it released as "Shaolin Master Killer") which is a VERY cool old school Kung Fu movie that has amazing training scenes including some awesome three sectional staff work.

I promarily drinak Coffee in the morning for the taste but also the Caffiene boost, and then Tea in the afternoon/Evening.. I really like Tea after dinner... kind of a Canadian/Britich tradition I guess.. Sunday is the real coffee dat for me.. It's Coffee, Sunday Paper, Big Breakfast, happiness... Throw in a terrible raging Winter Storm outside to look at and I am pretty much in heaven! *grin*
