Close. If someone says they're a liar, as per your question, then I would say 'yes', since they didn't precise whether they were lying at that moment. I think the better question would be "if I told you I always lie, would you believe me ?" But there are 2 problems with that question. First, a question isn't a lie, so by asking the question they prove that they don't always lie. Second, by saying the phrase 'I always lie', they are the ones creating the paradox. So there's no need to respond to the question. Just my take on it.

I would say no, because people slow down just for the speed camera, then drive at their normal speed once they've passed. Plus, quite a number of speed cameras are placed so that the fines given will generate revenue, not slow drivers down in dangerous areas. If you want people to slow down, better go for speed bumps. I know people hate them (I do, at any rate), but they're more effective to slow traffic down.

@P0ss : I agree. I mentionned this, too : "If it adapted somewhat (longer legs for longer strides), I think it would be quicker than the classical alien form." This can apply for the different forms it would eventually takes. But like Ati points out, it would have to sacrifice something for this, and I don't think it would consider the benefits as enough to change. Sure, if it took Alien form, hollowed out and stuff, it would be able to catch up, but it takes a hit and goes down quicker too, losing time to reconstruct itself. @Quantumbeep : I kinda supposed that the human form WAS the native form. It was supposed to be a human killer, and would need to blend if better.

I remember some talk a few months back about licenses for music, saying that you would have to have a license for eveny instance of a song. So, for example, you have it on CD=> one license You rif it to MP3, as a backup=> 2 licenses You place said backup on your server, and access it via another PC=> 4 licenses. Why 4 ? CD, backup on server, third on the second PC, and one for the transfer, because they consider one instance to be 'in' the network cable. I haven't heard any more from this, and i'm hoping never to hear more of it, but you have to wonder what's going through their puny minds to think up such stupid tricks.

@Lacey (who's Awwesome again) : I have trouble imagining the film if they would have kept the old school animation style. It wouldn't fit in with the current CGI trends. Just lookng back at CGI films (not films with CGI effects, à la Staw Wars 1, 2 and 3), you have either attempts to be real (Final Fantasy, which causes the studio to be shut down due to lack of success after it's first and only film), or cartoon-eske (Incredibles, Toy Story, Monster & Co, Robinsons (soon), and more). It would have been good for nostalgia (*old man's voice* when IIIIiii ...w-as a young maaaannn *cough* we didn't have this nwww-fangled C.G.whatsitsss... ), but for a modern film, I'm not so sure.

Religious Theory - Posted By Mad Ant - Karma received: 0
@Biglew : I was more asking for references in the publications of Jehovah's Witnesses, since you say " you have definate dates that have past a few times and you keep reassigning them". Of the dates mentionned (1914, 1915, 1918, 1920, 1925, 1941, 1975 and 1994), I've only heard of 1914 (which isn't credited as being the end of the world) and 1975. Never heard of the others., and the "etc" leaves me doubting If you do have the reference, feel free. As for "gotta love the internet", you can find an incredible amount of bull on the internet, and I doubt anyone here will contradict me on that. I actually have no trouble reading. However, I was pressed for time, so I was probably a little quick in answering in my previous post. Since you've copy/pasted 2 different sites, I'll take them seperately. First part (from http://www.exposingchristianity.com/Watchtower.html) 1925 : I've not found references to any Watchtowers, but rather to a book published early-20's, called "Millions Now Living Will Never Die", of which it is said, in 1926 "It was stated in the ‘Millions’ book that we might reasonably expect them to return shortly after 1925, but this was merely an expressed opinion." Article continues : "There were 44 more predictions; 42 from the Watchtower, from May 1940- April 1943." yet fails to give anything about the actual dates of the articles, and I haven't been able to find mention of them. 1975 : probably the better-known date, since it's been calculated through geneology of Genesis to mark the 6000 years of human existance. However, I haven't found a reference in any Watchtower or Awake refering to 1975 as being THE date. Instead, I find the article "Why Are You Looking Forward to 1975?" (Watchtower 1968 8/15 p494-501) says : > Yes the article doesn't say that 1975 will be the year, only to be faithful up to 1975 and beyond. Quote from Watchtower 1966 10/15 p631 : > I also have a problem with an article that bashes Jehovah's Witnesses, and continually misspells it as « Jehova », even when quoting. But that's a minor point. Second article (http://www.xjw.com/predict.html) 1914 : The year 1914 still is an important date, but not that of the « end of the world ». 1975 : Article quotes Watchtower 8/15/1968, p.499 > Does it give a definite date ? No. The words straight after is : POSSIBLY. Confirmed later in the same article, quoted above. Concerning the quote from God's "Eternal Purpose" Now Triumphing for Man's Good, p.51, (1974) , it continues, in the same chapter : > The extract from Kingdom Ministry, 5/1974, p.3 is talking about pioneers, and not about 1975. In fact, the year 1975 isn't mentionned once on the entire page. Plus, it's not encouraging everyone to behave in such a way, since it continues : « Circumstances such as poor health or responsibilities in connection with your family may limit what you can do in the field ministry. » It wouldn't say that if they were so sure about the year 1975. The following exerpts talk about generation. So let's define it : > Your article quotes : "Most of the generation of 1914 has passed away. However, there are still millions on earth who were born in that year or prior to it. . . . Jesus' words will come true, 'this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened.'" --Awake! 4/8/1988, p.14 Yet, if we consider people who lived in 1914, there are still some alive now who were born prior to 1914. That seems to fit the definition of 'generation' quite well. And it fits with the different quotations, aswell, since this is still going on, as we are in the « last days » (your quote : Watchtower 7/15/1991, p.5) Concerning the quote from Watchtower 11/1/1992 p.18 it's preceded by the words : A balanced view of education can help. For many young people of the world, education is a status symbol, something to help them climb the social ladder, the key to a prosperous, materialistic life-style. For others, schooling is a chore to be dispensed with as quickly as possible. Neither of these views is appropriate for true Christians. Kinda makes it sound ... reasonable. Besides, isn't all education a means to an end, to find a job, earn a living. If some choose it to be a J.W. pioneer, their choice. The 4 next quotes are talking about last days and conclusion, but anyone reasonable can admit that a conclusion takes time to finalize.

I see he value of debate because many people are still open enough to change views. Plus, one person can't think of everything, and someone on the same or opposing 'team' can give a point which I wouldn't have thought about otherwise. Of course, if one person or party is just too stubborn or entrenched, or if the debate turns into something else, then it won't achieve anything from that point on, but otherwise, yeah, I think it's something worthwhile.

AFAIK Slackware isn't source-based. I used to use Gentoo, but then it started to get on my nerves with emerge breaking Xorg, and not being able to updating anything. A word to the wise, never do an 'emerge portage'. It doesn't work. Had to reinstall the PC. So I'm on Ubuntu now. Anyway, as soon as someone says that one distro/method/Windows interface/scientific calculator/other is better, beware the linux zealots. It's bring them out of the woodwork faster that an ice-cream van attracts fat kids.

There are several, but all the ones I've seen have a 17" screen or more. Most Acers (the 17" and 21"), Toshiba Satelites, some HPs and Packard Bells (although I'ld rather gourge my eyes out with a spoon). And, if you push a little, the Dell 21" and Alienware laptops also.

I've had haggis, and I found it to be nice. When I return to Scotland, I'll try and have some more. I don't think I've ever eaten anything really gross. I'll try most things once, although you'll never catch me eating black pudding or anything of the sort. Although, we went to a Tunisian restaurant once (the family and myself), and they server tea, but mistook the salt for sugar. I'm glad I didn't have any, the look on my family's face was priceless. My dad thought it was on purpose, and continued to drink saying it was an 'acquired taste'.

I'm not a very emotional person either, much like Ati, and tend to keep to myself quite a bit, although this is getting better as I grow older. I did read something about this, though. It said that the brain will, for a certain choice or path, think aout a certain number of outcomes. Basically speaking, you will have a certain amount of positive and negative endings to the different scenarios. The more intelligent you are, the more different scenarios you can have (it's paraphrasing, and simplified, but it's good enough for the point). Coupled with the fact that the brain tends to focus on the negative scenarios, an intelligent person will see more negative possibilities than someone less intelligent.

I read something earlier about virii attaquing other malignant virii, but for the life of me I can't remember if I read it on the net or in a magasine. Anyway, I think it would be possible, but only to the extent that the actual makeup of the 'program' that you want to send out could be DNA-encoded (for lack of a better term), grafted onto another DNA block without altering it beyond it's purpose (transporting the 'program'), before sending it on its way. And I don't think that the studies in nono-biology are advanced enough in this area.

@Tofugorilla : I read that interview of Bjarne, and found that phrase hillarious. I learnt C, and then C++. I didn't find it to be that much of a torture, but you have to be able to understand the goal of object-oriented programming, and then is just basically applying C to that idea.

To 'continue' Ati's thoughts, it's like people who believe their name was chosen for them, and that it will determine their life. And then they take programs to make amalgams of their names. And it's statisticaly very likely that something close to you will come out. So to say that the Bible Code is real ... I'm not convinced.

I'm using Ubuntu on my main PC (Dual boot with Windows XP) and have it installed on my file server (goooOOOO SAMBA !!!). The thing I find the best with Ubuntu is the community : it's pretty easy to find what you need with a quick and dirty google search. So far, there hasn't been a problem encountered that I haven't been able to find the solution to (although I admit to sometimes looking through Gentoo documentation for Samba, since I find it doesn't set it up well).
