Destructive/Constructive emotions - 17 May, 2007
Re(V)aN says
i have decided to boil all emotions down to this:

Destructive Emotions:
hate
depression
anger
fear
sadness
lust

Constructive Emotions
joy
love
sanguinity
trust
exuberance
peace

now some might categorize these emotions as instead of constructive and destructive, as good and bad, or even evil and divine, but there is no such thing as good and bad. everything is in the eye of the beholder.

Energetic Emotions
lust
hate
anger
exuberance
joy
love

Non-Energetic Emotions
sadness
depression
fear
sanguinity
peace
trust

i can also predict people will say "trust isnt an emotion, and exuberance and joy are the same thing" let me defeat both these arguments immediately by stating that trust is indeed an emotion, ive felt it, and that exuberance is more bounciness and joy is more from the chest.

now there is great evidence to say that the destructive, energetic emotions are by far the most powerful. also, it is very hard to take a positive emotion of any kind and turn it negative. take love- it is very easy to turn love of one person into hate of another. but hating one person is not an easy way to start loving anyone- it is neigh impossible. the only reason to try to use positive emotions as opposed to negative ones is that negative energy is bad for you. ati, i can hear you say "on what scientific proof". let me put it this way, if you have hated and killed all your life, you arent probably very happy. and happy people live longer. also, you will have built up enemies, and said enemies will try to kill you. between these two, you are much more likely to live old if you live like gandhi, who did die by the gun, but at the age of 90-something, as opposed to tupac shakur, who died i believe in his early thirties. maybe twenties. cant remember. however, gandhi almost starved himself to life twice, lived completely for other people, and never owned a single thing. so what it all comes down to is faith. will you place faith in an unknown force to guarantee you a bliss when you die, by good will, or will you risk eternal damnation for living life like there's no tomorrow? because, after all, there might very well not be.

I think they all spring from the same source, the emotions you call destructive can often serve important purposes, and even be constructive. The reverse is also true.

P0ss makes an excellent point.. Some "destuctive" emotions can be very useful. Fear can help us to react to a dangerous situaion with increased strength and speed. Lust can propel us to Passion. SAdness can lead to insight and intropection. Also some of the "constructive" emotions can have side effects. "Peace" and "Sanquinity" can lead to prosperity but it can also lead to "sloth" and "gluttony". "Exhuberance" can become irrational and give one an overactive sense of optimism.

Life is a collection of all these emotions and we have to experience and grow from all of them. Certainly we enjoy experiencing things like Love and Joy more than Sadness and Anger, but it is all part of our life and shapes who we are.
