| Not sure if this is just for free MMO's, so I'm going to post my entire resume of MMOs, because it's actually not too long. 1 WoW The king of MMOs currently. Gameplay is cool, graphics are a style all their own. Community can feel immature, but so does 99% of the internet. I used to play on my 1.33ghz iBook with little real problems, so sys specs are surprisingly light. Lag was only an issue when I beta tested. 2 Ragnarok Online So many free servers out there you could call this a free one I suppose. I've always liked the anime style characters and the motions and sprites were always decent quality. Gameplay was pretty straight forward. Double click or right click for a specific move. Community was always on the light side as I played in free servers. There were some that had a surprising amount of people in them. And they always seemed to either be too busy to be nice, or so nice they would spend the day showing you how to play and find the good stuff. Specs and lag were never issues. Really light game. 3 UO (Ultima Online 2d) My first MMO experience, that would forever shape what I thought an MMO should be. Classes that were important, professions you could actually make money at and enjoy playing. A huge world with all sorts of places to explore. Some classes seemed way too powerful compared to others though. The lack of a level system was also very cool. Refreshing actually. But it made gauging who you could handle in a duel almost impossible (had to be able to recognize rare armor). This could be played on a weak system from 98. Lag was a problem. But on 56k, everything was tough. 4 FFXI Gameplay was rough. You had to be in a party of five to progress at all. At certain levels it'd take hours before you could find a party to go level, and nearly every time someone would leave early, stranding your entire party to another hour or so of searching for a replacement. I liked the graphics and loved the Final Fantasy world. But it got pretty boring really fast. Community was predominantly Japanese that made it hard to communicate. And it had a very novice set of American players that didn't how to do anything. System specs required about the same as WoW and lag never really impacted me that I can remember. There are probably a number of others I've played that I can't remember, which should be a testament to their quality. I've since switched to Mac since my MMO playing days, and my choices have been reduced to almost nothing. Still looking though. |

| WoW By far the most solid and polished MMO I've played (haven't played LOTRO yet, but I hear good things), my only vice is that the core gameplay is sort of slow and boring though, but that's typical of most MMO's. The real meat is in the instances and PVP, those two factors can keep me busy forever. The problem is, with the latter, it's impossible to level with, which is why I'm waiting on Warhammer. You can progress from character creation to level cap, purely through PVP or PVE, however you choose. |
