The Journey Method - 31 March, 2007
Mahmut says
Hi Guys,

Todays lesson is on the Journey Method or sometimes called the method of loci. There is a little difference between the journey method and the method of loci but that doesnt really matter so lets start with the lesson.

Now when I say journey what comes to your mind. When journey comes to my mind i imagine a scenic route in my mind. Maybe it can be me going home from school or the beach.

That is exactly what the journey method is. A scenic route in your mind with stops on the way. The journey method needs a little of visualisation to master the technique that is all. The journey method can be used for anything. For memorising lists, numbers, lecture notes and much much more. Now for the technique

To use the journey method really well you have got to plan a route of at least 30 stops in your head and put it paper But remember it has to be a logical path. the following is my journey of my house. just use it as an example

So it maybe like this:
1. Front Fence
2. Front stairs
3.Door
4. Study wall one
5. Study wall 2 with windows
6. Study wall 3
7. Study wall 4
8. Corridor
9. Toilet
10. Sinks
11. prayer room door
12. Prayer room wall one
13. Prayer room wall two
14. Prayer room wall three
15. Prayer room wall four
16. Living room couch one
18. Living room couch two
19. Living room couch three
20. Living room couch four
21. Kitchen stool one
22. kitchen stool two
23. kitchen stool three
24. kitchen stool 4
25. kitchen table side one
26. kitchen table side two
27. kitchen table side three
28. kitchen table side four
29. Exit of living room
30. Laundry door

Now time to apply the technique. My favorite subject for the journey technique is Chemistry. So lets say we were memorising the periodic table. we will apply an element in each stop. we will go down by groups of the periodic table. You will need images for numbers. Ill put the techniques for them later on so lets start.

Group for noble gases

1. Helium =2
2. neon =10
3.Argon =18
4. Krypton =36
5. Xenon =54
6. Radon =86

now lets start

Note: remember to apply the link system and smashin scope or else you have no use with the Journey Method.

Ok stop 1 which is my front fence. I see a huge HELIUM BALLON floating around and nocking my whole front brick fence down. but as i look closer i see the famous turkish soccer player Okan Buruk (OB=02) in there. He is trying to get out but cant. Note the colour of the ballon. how big it is. What its doing there and so on.

Next stop is my front stairs. Now whats the next element in the group its neon. At my front steps I see my school teacher (10=AO) there. She is sitting down but something looks wierd about her. She looks a little pale. I go next to her to ask her if she is sick when suddenly she starts glowing like a NEON LIGHT. Again note all the detail in the scene

My next stop is my front door. Whats the next element in the group its Argon. Now I imagine Adolf Hitler (18=AH). He has got a mask on and is doing some ARGON WELDING on my front door and i cant open the door becuase its welded together and we start having an argument with adolf.

My next stop is Study wall one.Next element is Krypton. This time we can imagine Claudia Schiffer (36=CS). Now imagine Claudia Schiffer acting like superman and trying to fly when all of a sudden Krypton is leaking all from my wall. Since superman cant go next to krypton she starts to loose her powers and gets really tired. Whats Claudia Schiffer doing there in the first place!!!

My next stop is my study wall 2 with windows. I can imagine Eddie Murphy (ED=54) jumping into my study room and smiling to me with the great big eddie murphy smile . Note all the glass breaking and all the detail. Eddie is trying to take a picture of me with a CAMERA WITH A FLASH (xenon is used in camera flashes). The flash is so bright that it nearly blinds me.

My next stop is My study wall 3. On this wall we see a big can of RADIOAVTIVE MATERIAL (RADON). Note how big it is and the colour of the material. Imagine HOMER SIMPSON (HS=86) diving into the radioactive material to find a nice jam donut. How stupid is he!!!.

there you go you have memorised a group of elements. You must be thinking gee's all that for 6 elements. remember what i write in paragraphs can be visualised by you in seconds. That is an example of how we use the journey technique. By combining Smashing scope, The link method and the journey technique you can see how powerful it is. I hope you liked the lesson.

Bye for now
